Windshield Wipers

New to the forum and currently building a FFR. What does a Texan do about wipers? I don't want them but I am assuming they will be required for inspection.

Johnnyquest 05-03-2004 02:27 PM

It is required by TXDOT. But, you might find some friendly stations that won't care.

Some have bought the Hotrod clip on style hand-crank just for the inspection process. I don't venture out when there is a chance of rain anyway!

If you title it as a 65, it will be smog exempt but still will have to conform to safety standards.

Do a search here regarding inspections and or title information for Texas.

Also, if you haven't already do the same on FFcobra.com (Factoryfive Forum). There is a lot of information there and also a well planned out affair with TXDOT including the required forms, etc. is available by doing a search.

Also if you put Antique plates on your Cobra and register them you don't have to get the car inspected at ALL!! :D

Skilman,
You might want to re-think your position on not wanting wipers.
You will most likely get caught in nasty weather some where along the line, and you will wish you had them.

Oh, Skilman, use the clip on wipers for inspection.

Last time I got caught in the rain, there was as much water on the inside of the windshield as the outside. I unclip them and keep them in the trunk though, just in case. Then the posts are all you see.

Brent,
Any way you slice it, getting caught in a down pour ain't pretty.
I keep a towel in the car with me to deal with what you are talking about. Wipers wiping on the outside and me wiping on the inside has kept me alive long enough to drive through the storm. The alternative is to stop on the side of the highway (dangerous) and take a shower. or if lucky enough, pull under a bridge. (also dangerous)

I don't have wipers however I do keep RainX on both sides of the glass. It has saved the day once or twice. 8-)

I did not like the look of the wipers either, so after getting inspected, I went to a Harley Bike shop and bought two chrome caps to go over the splines for the wipers.

They look great and can replace wipers for next years inspection in five minutes.

Did the RainX thing too............just in case I get caught in one of those gulfcoast afternoon showers!

Is this not Texas? It does rain here. Everyone wants original looking cars and maybe every real Cobra came with wipers?

Help!

Buying a 67 Cobra Replica from Fla. Having it shipped here to FW Texas. The car has a small plexi glass windshield and no windshield wipers.
any advice as to what I need to do to have the car properly inspected and registered? Where do I get the clip on wipers? Thanks! I'm new to all of this...any info would be greatly appreciated!

gsharapa 09-27-2014 12:56 PM

I don't think you need them with the racing wind screen but I'd check with a Texas inspection station first. If needed you can put the small Hot Rod manual one on temporary to get it inspected then take it off.

I built my car in 1982, long before all these Cobra companies and parts were around. So I looked at every real Cobra I could, to get an idea of what to do about things like wipers. Original Cobras used the same system as all the British sports cars of the era. So I found a TR3 in a boneyard and took all the wiper parts from it. It's a simple cable driven system - easy to install and looks original. The nice thing is, this stuff is still available new and with the internet, it's easy to find. Here's a catalog where you can order brand new stuff. Easy-peasy.

Thanks guys much appreciated....I called around and finally found someone that said would do it if I get the manual windshield wiper. No one will do it w/o a wiper. I'm going to check out speedway motors and see what they have. My windshield is curved so I'm sure I'll have to modify. Thanks again!
