Number of License Plates Required In Texas
Need Information and advise on the number of license plates that are required in Texas. Will be taking delivery of my MK III from Reed Performance in about a month. Also any advise , suggestions on getting it inspected and titled in Texas would be appreciated.

All cars in Texas require 2 plates...when you go to register the car you will take it to the inspection station and get a green sheet. NOw in Texas the car is inspected as the year it represents so you only have to meet 1965 standards.
Once you have the green sheet you have to go to your local DPS/Tax office and get your registration tag, pay your taxes on the car and get your 2 plates. Do a search under registration and you will find a couple of posts under this forum from about 2 years ago. Matt |
As of
September 2005, only one license plates will be required!!
Thank You Very Much The Royal One?? |
Is that official? I heard a couple months ago that they were trying to pass it, but I hadn't heard anything since then.
|
If the car came from the factory with a place for only one plate, then that is all you need.

No the bill did not pass...I have seen several posts on different boards but you will still be required to use 2 plates Mr Meadows!!!! WRONG AGAIN!

This is Section 502.404 from the current TX Transportation Code...but I couldn't find anything about September changes...

What you should ask is who here lives by the two plate rule on their Cobra? I don't and none of our group does.
I had Corvette's for years and never had a front plate. Also, registration can be a pain depending on where you live. If your MSO states 1965 no problems, but many are changing this to the year built/assembled or 2005. You can always have it registered as a 2005 assembled and the only thing you worry about is what your insurance card states, mine says 1965, in Texas that means anything prior to 68 is basically smog free. **Do a search on Titling and Texas Registration. League City is far better than Houston from what I remember others stating.** JQ |
Johnny, you're right, that's the real question. I've been stopped for no front plate 3 times in 43 years of driving in TX, usually when the cop is looking for something else...never in the Cobras, Corvettes or other high-perf cars. I never run a front plate, just personal pref. I wish they would do away with the law.

If you would send Governor Edwards home, there would not be enough people to make two plates for each car and the Austinites would have to change the law.:D

Texas License
As the proud new owner of SFP1230, I got my car licensed in Collin County today. Titled as a 1965 Ford, I licensed it as an antique (as opposed to a classic) - with an antique you will never need an inspection. They provided me with one antique license plate for the car which is valid until 2008.
I have been looking for 1965 plates on the net but have been unable to find anything acceptable so I asked the nice lady at the county what the process was when I found 1965 plates. When I find the plates - 2 of them (see my comment above about being issued 1 plate - go figure) - I will take them in for a quick inspection to make sure they are legible and "authentic" 1965 plates. As long as the plate number is not already taken and they meet the above criteria they are good to go - this includes newly manufactured replica plates... |
I also registered in Dallas county as 'antique', was issued one plate, good til hmmm. '08? Don't remember!
So, I guess it depends on the plate. |
