Title transfer and plates
My car arrived last night, and now the fun begins.
She's from out of state, with "bill of sale", odometer statement and signed title intack. The DMV has a handfull of forms to fill out for transfer, but what direction has everyone gone with the title and tags? Antique or normal, personalised or plane Jane plates, where to place the safty stickers???????? I've looked at some of your photo's, and very few are the same. Thanks in advance. I can't wait until morning to wake up the neighbors. Steve |
Unless the car is 25 years or 15 years you don't have the option of Antique or Classic plates..I say go personal.

What year is on your title? If it is recent, you will have to go with normal or personalized plates. If it is say a 1965 or 1966 (car has to be 25 years or more old) you have a few more options: - Antique - Cheaper but has restrictions. Officially you can only drive to and from events with these plates. - Classic - No restrictions and says "Classic Auto" - Can be personalized. Cost an extra $15.00. Not sure what other advantages there are. - "Old Plates" - Use the same form as "Classic" but you can use old plates with the same year as indicated on your car's title. Seeing as how you don't have a 60's Cobra,you only have 2 choices. Regular plate or personalized.I went personalized. The Inspection sticker goes in the lower left corner of the windshield. "Place the windshield vaidation sticker within 6 inches of the safety inspection sticker". You'll need insurance first, then inspected, then registered.

i just got my car inspected last week and had a small problem...parking brake...but got that taken care of..i brought my car in from florida...make sure you get a GREEN SHEET at inspection...that gets you the pplates..my car is titled as 1965...i havent registered yet..spoke to the guy at dmv and he said they tax the car not on the bill of sale, but by something like book value...since my is titled as 1965 BACKDRAFT and ROADSTER..it wont be any book..wondering if anyone has a recommendation for keeping my sales tax at a minimum..thx

yep - got to have the green sheet, but it has been a couple. I thought they asked me what I paid just like any used car. Bought mine from Penn

I've done all the exact same thing. Just waiting for the form 130-U to be returned from the previous owner then I'll take a few days off from work to visit the DMV. The inspector gave me an "Out Of State Identification Certificate" along with the Inspection Report. I hope that is what the "Green Sheet" is. |

Just search title transfer in the Texas site and all the information you want has already been posted. Texas law is to transfer the title within 30 days of purchase or you'll pay a small fine like $ 30.00 or ? You actually can transfer the title just with a bill of sale if it's not running or you are putting engine in late etc. You of course can not drive it until you license the vehicle and that's where you will need the green sheet (state inspection) which test the vehicle for lights, brakes, tires safety etc to be completed on the vehicle plus proof of insurance.

Forgot to add the green sheet inspection sheet can be obtained at most any dealership or state inspection sites all around town.
