Factory Five Customer Service Update
FFR is going to replace both sidepipes at no charge. Both of them seem to be defective, possibly due to overheating during the weld process. The welds seem to be fine, but the pipes themselves are stress-cracked around the welds. Many thanks to Mike Pisani at FFR, finally some good customer service. But I am still waiting to hear from them on steering wheel alignment that I e-mailed them about.

I can't seem to get the steering wheel in the proper position when the wheels are straight

You will need to center the steering wheel...then loosen the nut that is between the inner and outer tirerods....then turn the inner tierods until the wheels are straight. An alignment shop can do this a lot easier than it will be for you. It's not bad, you just have to adjust them lower the car until you get it right...a little time consuming.

I don't think the tie-rods are long enough for that, the steering wheel is off about 1/4 turn

If worse come to worse, you could drill and tap new holes in the hub to center the steering wheel. Cheers! Dave |
I have thought of that, but wanted to seek other options and I guess that opinions are not allowed on this forum

You can assemble your own Kirkham, just buy the pieces! My friend built his own SHELBY CSX8000, so that can be done as well. There are a couple of makes you simply cannot build yourself, add running gear only. BDR and SPF come to mind, might be others but I can't think of them right now...

I'm not sure you understand how to make the adjustment. There is your inner tierod that goes into your steering rack, then your outer tierod. There is a nut that tightens up against the outer..loosen the nut, then hold the outer still as you turn the inner with a pair of pliers. If it's only off a quarter inch then maybe one turn on each side should do it. Assuming you are using a Ford steering rack or a Flaming River rack, then it shouldn't be an issue at all, very simple adjustment. If not, then just take it to an alignment shop, it will cost you less than $75.

did you try adjusting the splines on the upper steering shaft?, on my mkIII i have one shaft that is double d tubing and the other is round and splined there is a little tongue that is bolted to the double d but on the round side you can take out the bolt and turn the spline and rebolt it for a fine adjustment.

That's what I'd do wrench. Pretty easy and one I've used a few times in the past.
