Goodyear GT2 or BF Goodrich TA: Which is better?
I'm seriously close to buying a new Superformance roller and the dealer offers the choice of either Goodyear GT2 or BF Goodrich TA tires. Which are better in your judgement? Aren't the Goodyear GT2's much newer technology then the much older BF Goodrich TA (or "Trans Am") tires?

Tim,
Are you going with 15" wheels? If so, you might want to look at the MT's or the Avons (pricey though). The dealer probably has easy access to the GYs or the BFGs, but you should go with whatever you want. |

The BFG's are pretty worthless on these cars. Not enough weight to get them to stick on dry or wet pavement.

They both suck in my opinion, but if I had to choose, I would go with the Goodyears.

I agree with Silverback that's like the lesser of two evils. They are hard and wear well but that means they don't grip worth a darn. I can show you a couple of crashed up cars from the lack of traction from the GTII. You are somewhat limited in the 15" sizes we need but it's worth dropping some money into tires for these things in my opinion. Look at Avons and the Goodyear Sports Car Special (Not road legal but they work)

I've had the third choice, Yokohama Avid S/T's on my SPF for 6 years now with no complaints. I've tracked them, smoked 'em and traveled thousands of miles on them with no complaints. The Goodyear GT II's can squeal like a little girl when pressed hard in corners, the BF Goodriches are just plain not worth the money on a sports car. I priced a new set on Yokohamas from Sears, lower than any other source available.
After a hard track run I checked tire pressures and scanned each tire across its width with a pyrometer for temp variations and temps were constant across the treads on all four tires and tire pressure was stable. Not bad for an inexpensive, good mileage tire.

I don't think they make the Avids in the 15" size anymore. Too bad, because it was the best bang for the buck. |

Goodyears squeal like a little girl? If you spun them in a straight line they squealed. However in corners mine would just break loose without any warning. That is what I hated about them.
I now have the Goodyear billboards and love them. They let you know when you are getting to the limit, and the limit is much higher than the GT II's. |

The M/T and Avons are what we use now. The plus to both of them is that they are available in a 295/50. The GTII seem to get harder the older they get, and the BFG just turn to powder and dry rot. Your installer might give you a credit for the included tires if you switch to the Avons.

I have BFG on my SPF and I can't say enough bad things about them. There is still a load of tread so I have a problem getting rid of them (ecomony and all). I do some track days and autocross on occasion and and will not do either again until I get some new tires. These tires have just got more and more slippery with time.

This has been covered before, but it's always worth a reminder.
"Properly stored tires that are protected from the elements and not mounted on a wheel age very slowly before they are mounted and put into service.

Sears tire store quoted me on a pair of 245/60/15's and 275/60/15's. I was surprised that they had access to them since I had such a difficult time finding them on-line, much less at a good price. The 275's were $83 each and the 245's were $76 each. I didn't price 295/50/15's but I may have them installed if they can get them.

They must have a few left. You should buy them if they can deliver. I don't see any Yoko's on Sears' website, Tire Rack doesn't have them, and they aren't on Yoko's website either.
BTW - The 295/50/15 on the Sears website is made by Hankook...I thought it was a typo, but it wasn't. :) |
