Aluminum or Stainless Steel Knock-off's

For street use, is there any preference between aluminum and stainless steel knock-off's? Aluminum knock-off's reduce unsprung weight, stainless steel doesn't have the same amount of thermal expansion, etc. I can see advantages to both.

Any safety issues with aluminum?

Aluminum ones are not as strong, obviously, and may therefore not survive your efforts to remove a knock off that is stuck on to the car.

If you lubricate properly and remove them somewhat regularly they are fine.

Knock Off's

Aluminum to aluminum is prone to sieze, ask me how I know!

Switched mine to Stainless to eliminate the galling issue.

And I've beat the dickens out of mine a few times over the years with a 3 lb. brass hammer. :3DSMILE: No bent ears, dings, nicks and such.

Who's the best aluminum polisher out there,(for wheels, intakes, etc.)?

If you go with aluminum get the forged rather than cast ones, best of both worlds.

Just the fact you beat on them go Stainless, I have seen a few bent alloy ones.

Bluedog 04-28-2011 02:56 PM

Stainless is the way to go!

I agree wholeheartedly. Aluminium on aluminium and you can just about guarantee you will get galling at some stage.

I finally got fed up worrying about the aluminum ones breaking and just got a set of stainless steel knockoffs from Cobra Racing in Torrance. Double advantage... look great and don't break.
