What size wheels and tires
I am starting my build and am looking for wheels and tires. My car will not be raced and will be used as a weekend driver. It will have a 351w with about 350hp. My kit is a street beast.
What size wheels and tires should I run? Thanks. |
295-50 X 15 Rears on 9" Halibrand style rims
245-60 X 15 Fronts Back space is going to be the thing you need to find out. On your fronts I would guess 3 1/2" to 4" back space. Rears depending on whether you have had your rear end narrowed or not could be anywhere from 4 !/2"-5 1/2" back spacing. Or you could go with 17" wheels and tires. Regardless these things seem to ride and handle best with wheel and tire combo of 26" diameter. Good Luck. Clois Harlan |
There are a host of threads about this. Here's the recap: The 17s have more tire options; the 15s are more period correct and ride a little smoother but finding good rubber can be a PITA.
I have 17" wheels with Kumho Ecsta XS 275/40/17s in the front and 335/35/17s in the back. I did notice a significant difference in gained straight-line traction with the Kumho 335s versus the smaller Yokohamas I used to have, but that is partially due to the tire compound. Of course, just to mix things up a little, I am planning to get some 15s, maybe with some Mickey Thompsons, to change the look occasionally. I have driven some cars with the Avons, and, like divorces, they cost a lot because they are worth it :) |
Most likely going to go with a North Racecars conversion to 5 lug for my 8.8 so not sure I will be shortening the axles.
I leaning towards 17 due to better choices of tires. I have a old bronco with 15's and there are not many tire choices. How wide do the rims need to be? 8.5 inch's? |
Mine are 17 x 9.5" front and 17 x 11.5" rear.

Strike that--I think they are 8.5" and 10.5".

I prefer the "look" of the 15's, but I wanted bigger brakes too. I'm with everyone else on better tire availability in 17's vs. 15's. Bigger brakes and better tire selection won me over to 17's: 245/45 fr on 17X8 and 315/35 rr on 17X11, both w/4" back space, but that may or may not work on yours.

Greetings from Arizona
I just bought my Cobra 3 weeks ago...had been sitting outside since 06, It has BFG 295/50r15's on rear and 265/50ri5's on front. Haven't found front tires in that size. I bought a pair of 235/60r15's to try. The old bfg's have lots of tread but are very hard from sitting in the sun. Jay |
