For All You Sunburst Wheel Enthusiasts

$8,000. Originals at HRE in NY:

Looks like 5 wheels in one picture, but I would ask if interested. No affiliation.

They're only 'worth that' if someone pays $8K.
These will need more money after purchase-they'll need epoxy or chromate coating between the beads to fight porosity.

FWB 10-09-2011 08:02 AM

holy crap, 8k.....um.....thats just dumb

mickmate 10-09-2011 06:54 PM

There was a set on e-bay being advertised a time or two at about twice that. Original wheels and other parts can be worth a lot to someone with an original car.

JLip 12-25-2011 05:19 PM

Hmmmm.......Good Luck!

I wish I had an original car to put those on.

Sunburst are aluminum not magnesium so I don't believe they have the same porosity issues. These wheels look great in person, I have personally seen them. And I can guarentee that if Billy has it, it is usually a cut above the rest and carefully inspected/cared for.

Would you rather mount, balance, install and THEN find they're leakers? An ounce of prevention...
Still for sale at 3 months and $8K...

There was a gentlemen reproducing the Sunburst wheels in magnesium. Unfortunately, no one is reproducing the Halibrand S/C Cobra II wheel in magnesium.

December 2008 ad for magnesium Sunbursts:

mickmate 12-26-2011 07:04 PM

Mike sold the patterns for those to legendary, it's a small circle as we know. Originals weren't magnesium as Sal was saying so the latest offering is closer to correct.

Sal Gerace 12-26-2011 08:28 PM

I sealed my magnesium wheels with I believe a zinc phosphate paint from a marine store. Comes in either the puke green or yellow color. Moeller is the company. Keeps the air from leaking out. Honestly I didn't know aluminum had that issue.
As far the price on these wheels. If I had an original Cobra and needed a set I would be very happy to part with $8000.00 to complete my car if this is what they needed. These wheels are only getting harder to find and they only come around once in a while. The price is relative to the car they are going on. Yes about five years ago similar wheels would be seen for $4000 or $5000. If you need a set and want to wait to see if you can get a better deal down the road by all means wait. Probably the guy with 500k car is not going to wait....
