Mickey Thompson

Used the search and nothing came up, wondering if anyone here tried the Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/R on their Cobras and what to expect from them.:)

Karl Bebout 09-01-2014 06:06 AM

DWRAT, over on AZ Cobras just put a set on his SPF within the last couple months. Might want to send him a PM. Think he likes them. Also heard that Cooper Cobras are the same tire for about 20% less $$$.

I recently put a set of M/T Sportsman S/R tires on my SPF and so far am happy with the ride and looks. I am running 26x12.00R15 in the back and 26x10.00R15 in the front. The 28's seem to be a little too tall for our use, but I have seen some guys running them. These tires are made by AVID and in my opinion are a great deal for the price if you are looking for a high performance street tire with some track capabilities.

I started out with BF Goodrich tires that came with the car (too hard and break loose too easily) then wore out a couple of sets of Yokohama Avid S/T tires and liked them a lot. They were reasonably priced, had predictable dry handling and went well in rain and snow. Unfortunately, they were discontinued by the manufacturer. I ran 295/50R15 rear tires and 245/60R15 tires in the front, just so you know what I am comparing the S/R tires to.

The Cooper Cobra tires are NOT similar to the MT S/R tires. They ARE similar to the MT S/T tires, of which I have also heard good things about. The MT S/T tires are less expensive than the S/R tires, and they are a completely different tire.

Hope this helps!
Jim

Great street tire.

This is from my iPhone, so I hope it works for you. I find Google search results are easier to sort through, even when it's specific to ClubCobra search results.

I'v gone from the MT S/R's to to Hoosier billboards to now MT S/T's . For all around street use the MT S/T suit me very well & have a comfortable ride and predictable break points which allows me to get used to the max break aways points in the curves. I am very pleased with them. The price is reasonable also. It should be noted the the Cooper Cobra's are the same basic tire as the S/T's & both are made by Cooper Tire; as are Avon's. But the S/T's & Cobras are priced much less than the Avon's. They also don't have the speed rating of the Avon's, but for street crusing & the occasional hard romp they work well for me.

Hey Jim, thanks for setting me straight on the MTs. STs/SRs got me so confoozed.

Jim Kellogg 09-01-2014 03:58 PM

Most SPF owners I know of that are running Mickey Thompson tires are running the S/T. Many others are running the Cooper Cobra tire. Both groups seem to be very satisfied with their choice.

I am very happy with my S/R choice, but as I said, I haven't put too many miles on them yet. My SPF was in the shop for awhile getting some repairs and upgrades, and she only came back home recently.

I am still sorting out some chassis and handling issues due to my high mileage (80k plus), effects of winter salt (several years but - no more!), and the car sitting for so long. Also getting used to my new (wilder) motor and trans setup. My next upgrade (hopefully a winter project this year) will probably be the R/T ball joints.
Cobra Valley's R/T Super High Performance Ball Joints

I am chasing a vibration in my SPF, and feel that the ball joint change should do the trick. Next spring I hope to start racking up the miles again, and should have a better feel for the Mickey Thompson S/R tires!

Here are a couple of photos of the Mickey Thompson S/R tires on my SPF so you can see what they look like.
Fronts are 26x10.00R15
Rears are 26x12.00R15

I had to search awhile to find photos of the 26" MT S/R on a Cobra, so perhaps this will help. Some like the 28" tire, but it is too tall for my taste.

I have put about 4k miles on my SPF MT S/R tires. I will replace with S/Rs if still available when the time comes.

Have the M/T S/R's on the rear of my 289FIA.

Like them very much. About 3000 miles on them

They are MUCH stickier than the Dunlop G/T Qualifiers.

This is a post I made several years ago.

Have just added two photo's of the S/R's in "my photo's" section

I have Mickey Thompson S/R tires on my Hurricane, 7 years old and look like new, very little tread wear and no cracking. I have put then through the paces but don't abuse them, no burnouts, have 21000 miles on them.
Going to replace them due to age only.

Good luck, Bill

I only wish they had a vintage looking tread pattern. Performance and size sound perfect. Are the ST's that much of a step down in performance?

S/T's here, very very pleased.
- Roll smooth, no vibration at any speed
- Quiet, no tire noise
- Decent traction, way stickier than the GY GTII prior
- Period correct look

Two Kirkham owners here in Utah run them, too. Good comments even on the track!
