Tell me how dirty you get from these babies.

I carried them each to the garage, picked them up and moved them a few times and my hands are perfectly clean. No gunk or residue on me whatsoever.

Same here. However, now that I have a substantial increase in traction, I have some wheel hop, in the past, just wheel spin. On go the traction masters.

Did you wash and clean the tires before and/or after mounting and installation?

Mine just got here an hour ago, so no. I suppose once I'm ready and before mounting I could give them a good wash with some of Griot's tire cleaner and prep, then some of their dressing. Is that necessary though?

I was actually asking Rodneym since his tires apparently are "grubby."

However, when I get my new Avons, I will absolutely clean and protect them.

rodneym 01-12-2015 11:51 AM

Tire dressing? Not I. :p
I'm on my 3rd set of Avons. All grimey.
I'd wipe them with tire stuff to clean them but I don't like that plastic, shiney look. In fact, I just like them looking like rubber. %/
They're just grimey, I tell ya!

rodneym 01-12-2015 11:53 AM

Rodknock, what are you protecting them from?

Climate change, aging, etc. You know, a bit like wearing sunblock, avoiding sugar, simple carbs and processed food, eating lean protein and vegetables, taking vitamins, etc. in order to live longer.

Also, don't want to dirty my clothes, if I happen to rub against them in the garage.

rodneym 01-12-2015 12:09 PM

More about useage than age.
Like my Avons, I plan on wearing out before my time. :p

Dimis 01-12-2015 12:53 PM

Rodneym - mine are grubby too.
You can wash 'em, they can look clean... but as soon as you start handling them... filthy little critters.

JP
Thanks for the heads up on the BFG's
A set of two are on the FedEx truck as we speak
13 years and 17k miles on the rears.
Never had an issue, don't track it but still have fun from 0 to 60 every chance I get
Jim

13 years is dangerously old for tyres. All of the manufacturers recommend that tyres are replaced at 10 years.

Maricopa 01-13-2015 09:59 AM

8 years and @40K on my BFGs without killing myself.....but then I don't have 600hp and know my limitations. Love to have a stickier tire if I didn't live on a dirt road.

PNJSNAK 01-13-2015 10:16 AM

I have had a difficult time locating the 295 size the last few years.
I only put maybe 500 miles on the car the last couple of years.
The tires are in very good shape in the sidewall area. A little thin in the tread area.
Any way a BIG THANK YOU to this website and members for letting "at least" me, know that they were available again.
I was thinking of going Mickey Thompson, but the fronts I have are like brand new.
So for now I will stay with the BFG's

zrayr 01-13-2015 02:36 PM

to paraphrase a bible verse, it's easier for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle than it is to get a BFG lover to try Avons. They'd rather fight than switch ( anyone remember that slogan from Tareyton Cigarettes ? )

That is why it is my cobra and not yours!

Might want to read Ecclesiastes 1:4. "The Dude Abides";)
Couldn't resist!

I couldn't resiist playing Hollywood for a minute. I've only have a couple of hundred miles on the Avons so far, but I easily say they have changed the character of my car as much as the Weber's, or as much as a vintage Paxton did for my '66 GT350.
