Would love to get the magnesium wheel project off the ground, so if you haven't contacted M&A to get your name on The List, then please do. Thanks.

Why are these adds showing up in the forum lines. Very irritating!

Probably paying for a little bandwidth and support resources so you don't have to pay. :)

MOTORHEAD 12-15-2009 06:27 PM

I would hope they are bringing some income to the site. Also, did you notice that the ads content pertains to the thread subject ? (I.E. subject and ads relate to "Wheels")

RodKnock 12-23-2009 01:19 PM

Hey, guess what? Out of the blue, I got an email today from the President of Halibrand. He said "We are currently looking to manufacture another run of our Cobra II wheels."

Is it coincidental that Christmas is in two days? I think not. ;)

Yahooo! :D :)

Sal Gerace 12-23-2009 02:17 PM

Are these made like the original? Have they mentioned a price?

kgs365 12-23-2009 02:35 PM

Rodknock....i trust you will keep us up to date on price etc...

RodKnock 12-23-2009 08:46 PM

Sal, I assume they (Halibrand) will make them similar to their last production run in the early 2000's. The run from the early 2000's looked exactly like the run made in the 1960's or 1970's that Steve Sunshine was selling on eBay a few weeks ago.

I'll keep everyone updated, since I'll need everyone to buy a set to get this production run off the ground. The last prices were $765/each for the front and $795/each for the rear. I would hope the price will be similar since that is what M&A Castings was quoting ($725-ish) for a brand new wheel w/o the Halibrand stamp.

I plan to speak with Halibrand after the Holidays.

Sal Gerace 12-24-2009 09:16 AM

Thanks for keeping this going Rod Knock!! We appreciate all the effort you put forth trying to get somebody to make these wheels for us.:)

RodKnock 12-24-2009 01:35 PM

No problema. I really want a set of magnesium wheels. I was totally surprised when I got an email from the President of Halibrand a couple days before Christmas. I'm stoked.

ERA Chas 12-24-2009 02:41 PM

Just curious: how many of you guys plan to have machined or polished outers/as-cast centers or just gonna let them oxidize?

I've kept mine polished since '91-PIA but didn't want them to deteriorate-and they haven't.

RodKnock 12-24-2009 02:52 PM

From what I've seen with these wheels, the deterioration seems minimal when kept garaged and in mild climates. I do not plan to polish the rims and the rest of the wheel will have the Dow 7 chromate coating on it. I'm not a big fan of the polished look on magnesium wheels, but I won't say "never." Also, there's a product marketed under the name of Gibb's brand which appears like an oil, but supposedly isn't and keeps the magnesium wheels in near perfect shape.

ERA Chas 12-24-2009 03:11 PM

Yes Rod, I've seen that:
http://www.roadsters.com/gibbs/
Excellent article on wheel care.

You're right about garage care but be advised-humidity over 60% and rain/washing will rapidly cloud and then "texture" and dull the surface. Like you I was never a glitzy look guy but used polish more as a preservative.

Funny, in all these years, I never tried this Gibbs treatment...

You should try it and report the results back here. I would like to hear if it actually does what is advertised.

The Bay Area is a fairly mild climate and the Mid-Peninsula doesn't get that humid. Who washes their cars anyway?

Someone told me that Redwood City with an average temperature of 72 degrees is considered the best all around climate in the US. I haven't verified this "fact", but living nearby makes me feel better.

Dude,
An aluminum car with magnesium wheels in proximity to salt water-

Uh, I'm not that close to salt water.

ERA Chas 12-25-2009 07:13 AM

Any one else care to reveal their plan for intended wheel finish? I guess about 25 of you are signing on for this batch.

RodKnock 02-04-2010 05:06 PM

I got this message from Halibrand a couple weeks back, but forgot to share it:

"I have worked on it, we are just behind due to the holiday lag, and much to get done. I haven't forgotten you, and will call soon to share my thoughts. Thanks for your email."

The message was from the President of Halibrand. So it would appear that another batch may be on the horizon. Thankfully.
