Can anyone recommend.........

someone to set up a ring and pinion in an IRS? I've got an IRS w/aluminum center section and 3.73 gears. Too steep for my stroker FE. I'm thinking I want to go to 3.27's unless someone talks me in to 3.08's. I'll be running a TKO 600 w/.82 5th behind the FE.

Just looking for someone that does good work in the Tulsa metro area. No big rush, I haven't pulled the center section out yet, nor do I have the new gears. Just need a name and number for when the time comes.

thanks in advance,
Joe

hey joe

i have a cast iron unit with the gears you might be looking for, don't think it has the ls installed though, and am looking to switch to a 3.73 aluminum unit with ls. maybe we could work something out. my unit is currently being used and would have to be removed, 28 spline i believe. or if you want to sell your unit outright?

i do have a 3.73 gear in another car with the .82 od and i like the combination.

What is the power and power band of the motor??

wideglidejoe Joe you are running a stroker FE motor, Is it a low end or high rpm motor? (power range). What 1st gear are you looking at? With the weight of the car and rough power guess, the 3.20's -3.40's would be a good all around ration for the rearend. 1st gear should be in the 2.80's. I have a stroker 482 and 2 transmissions. A 3.31 rearend is nice for all around running. The 1 trans is overdrived with .78. I have a torque motor and low rpm range. Car cruises at 70 without and lugging. 3.08 may be too low unless you have low end power. The other thing is 1st gear in the trans, if it's anything over 3.00 ratio you will never use it. I have this issue with both trannies. One has a 3.25 1st and the other is a 3.05. IMO a 3.08 ratio is only good with a low end torque motor and a 4 spd or a 5 spd with a high 5th gear ratio in the .80's. I am changing to a lower first gear in my 5 speed, 2.78-2.65. Rick L.

thanks for the replies.......

Marty, thanks for the info, I'll look them up.

Vector1, I would like to keep my alum center section, as it already has LS, but just change the gears, but thanks for the offer! You stated "I do have a 3.73 gear in another car with the .82 od and i like the combination." What engine is in front of it? Another roadster, or another body style? Interesting that you like it! I've not driven mine yet, but with a FE 428 (4.25" stroker, now 445"), I'm just afraid my first gear (2.87 in TKO 600) will be useless?!?!?

Rick L, it's 445" (Scat 4.25 crank w/Probe forged pistons & I-rods), stock out of the box Edel Perf RPM heads and intake, 10.1:1 CR, full MSD, Holley carb (I have both 770 & 870 Avengers), and a Comp Cam 294H hydr flat tappet. With the long stroke, I'm not planning on high RPM's; probably limit it to 6,000 or 6,200. First gear in a TKO 600 is a 2.87 if I'm not mistaken. Another reason to go TKO 600 (w/.82 5th) over the 500.

From your comments, sounds like 3.27 is what I need.

Thanks to all for you insight!
Joe

wideglide, what i have is 335/35/17, 3.73 gear, tko600 w/.82, all neatly packaged in my jbl cobra. all gears are near perfect imo, from 1st to 5th. all useable. i don't drag race, and don't use 1st much except to drive slowly etc. but shifting through the gears i think they are spaced very well. i have a tko3550 w/.62 od in another with similiar setup and lower numbered rear gear, not sure exactly, and the 1st gear is comparable to tits on a boar and and the .62 od is nice for hiway cruising, but with the .82 od in the tko600 i can cruise and pass if needed without downshifting. i'd go with the 3.73, same size rear tires and tko600 anyday. btw, the cruise at 60 is about 2400 rpm 70 is 2800. you would think this is loud but it is not bad if you have a vacuum advance or run a lot of timing, the ignition is early enough in the cycle the exhaust noise is not bad. 1st gear is going to be useless in anything you use imo. install a lightweight clutch and they'll have to peel the smile off your face. guaranteed.

Vector1, thanks for the reply. Maybe I just need to finish it as is, drive it, then decide. I was just assuming up front that I had too much gear for the engine I was building.
