Toploader shifter
Hello All,
I finshed up my rebuild of a toploader and it is back in the car. I took it for a short spint to the gas station and it went through all the gears fine. At the pump I put it in reverse to test the reverse gear and it it worked fine then drove home. The next day I started her up put it in reverse and went to select 1st and it locked up. It seems as if the reverse did not disengage all the way. I disconnected the rod and closed the distance on the adjustment to get it to pull more. Now it is hard to select reverse if not impossible. Is there a trick to adjust the linkage besides using the 1/4 inch in the netural hole? Or is there a way to rebuild the shifter which is a Hurst super pro and where to get the parts. |
Used to have that problem on a regular basis with the toploader in my 427 Galaxie . Tried a new/rebuilt control box , rods , adjustments etc , but nothing worked . Finally went to a Hurst shifter and linkage and have had zero problems, plus it shifts much better . Don`t know why yours is a problem .... have you talked to David Kee ? I believe he carries parts for the Hurst stuff . I adjust mine the same way you did with the 1/4" rod .

Do you have the correct shift lever on the reverse cam and shaft? Depending on the sheft lever used the hole that locates the shift arm would swing through a longer arc causing the gear to not fully engage/disengage.

Yes, it was working before and I did not mess with this. It just seems as if it is hard to engage the reverse gear.
The car is jacked up so maybe if I speed the tires it will disengage a gear to allow me to slip into reverse |

I have the Ford shifter mechanism on a T10 4speed. The last few times I have been out in the car the 1-2 gate seems difficult to select from neutral, I'm sure the rods are ok but I am thinking the selector is not sliding on the large diameter shaft. Sounds like its time to get under it and remove, clean and relube it???
