Toploader 4spd For Sale
4 Attachment(s)
I've got this toploader and no future plans to use it.
Not sure what it's worth the # on the tag: HEHG 011129 |
I believe that is the early 1964 toploader for a 260/289 with 25 spline. It's the weakling of Toploaders. No offense, but unless you are doing a concours correct restoration, it's about worthless.
|
Why is it about worthless? As I recall, the issue is the mainshaft has a spline count that is a bastard and that would strip if you beat on it. Wouldn't a mainshaft swap make it as durable and viable as any other small block toploader? Mainshafts seem pretty cheap and since most folks would go through the tranny anyway before use, it would be simple to replace.

I would say price a mainshaft. You should replace 2nd and 3rd as well, so price those. Price a rebuild kit. If the sychronizer teeth on the input shaft are worn, price one of those. You may have to machine the tailhousing for the 28 spline, so price that if you need to. Compare this cost to a cost of a rebuilt one from david kee or toploader heaven, and decide if its worth it to buy this tranny for $1000 plus the costs to rebuild it. |
Thanks for the advice!
Looks like I'll throw this back in the corner of the garage and trip over it for another 10 years til the price of scrap goes up.

Looks like the top loader that originally came in the Sunbeam Tiger behind the 260 V8. I believe your case no. is the trans original to a 64 mustang with 260 V8. I might be worth something to the right restorer.

I think David kee told me that he used to buy "good" toploader cores for about $250-400, but then prices went up, so he came out with his own main and tailshaft cases. That was years ago. Do a search on ebay to see what people are paying for them. |
