TKO 600 and Quick time bell not mating...HELP!!!
 
UGHHHHHHHHHH

So I've got the Quick time bell housing (RM-6056) on my 427FE and got my TKO-600 (0.82 OD) but the input shaft seems to be too long!

Has anyone else run into this problem? I thought the Quick Time was supposed to take care of this issue because it is taller than the Lakewood!

Do I need a shorter input shaft for the FE?

I converted to a TKO 600RR and got a package through Bruce Couture's Modern Driveline. Included was a custom shortened input shaft and everything bolted up just fine. :p Give him a google. Rich

I believe Mike Forte makes a 0.20 spacer that will fix it.

Spacers work but you have a very good source for your TKO 600 in Detroit at Liberty Transmissions. www.libertysgears.com/ttc.htm these guys do excellent work.

dlotz Brent sell all the ideas you have. If you search this forum you will find this problem and solutions there too. I know there is a spacer to bolt to the bell housing. There is the change of the input shaft. Either way you need to double check to make sure that the trans doesn't wear out the thrust bearing on the crank. GM input shafts on lakewood bell housing are .380" too long and cause problems. The other issue is that they bolt up almost flat to the bell housing. Check to make sure the bell housing is centered on the crank also. Rick L.

Rick,

Dan called me last night and we discussed this at length. We were able to take the necessary measurements over the phone and he basically has two options: 1. Modify the input shaft 2. Grab a spacer.

He is taking care of this now with the vender that he bought the parts from.

As for why it happens, I'm not really sure. I think sometimes there is just a stacking of tolerances. His particular package was put together correctly, with all the parts being the correct ones.

Hi Guys,
Dan purchased the parts from me. We have spoken about this numerous times including last week while I was in Detroit for a TREMEC Elite meeting. I just called Dan minutes ago... Dan is in my cell phone auto dial.
From what Quick Time said, the bellhousing Dan has is a little shallow. Quick Time made some spacers to my spec of .200". They actually measure .184" and are not thick enough. I sent Dan a new TKO-600 input free of charge so he can machine it at work. We spoke about the installation and tips so it'll be easy for him.

My response to that is: No sh*t!? I'm surprised that they actually admitted it though. Of course those of us who have them already knew this after taking a zillion measurements and getting guidance from great guys like Brent and Mike. Both of whom helped me through this same process just a couple of weeks ago. Dang I got tired of other people telling me that I had the wrong input shaft!:LOL:

Ok, So I got the set up to finally fit, but I had to cut 5/16" off the end of the input shaft so that it wouldn't bottom out on the crank.

I then cut a 1/4" step into the pilot bushing to allow the splines that were bottoming out on the bushing to set further in. And everything fit!**)

This confirmed all my measurements and made sure it wasn't another issue.

Now, I am going to maching the new input shaft down to all the correct measurements so that I can put a full pilot bushing back in to replace the one I step cut.

I didn't like the idea of the spacer and my bell actually measured a depth just shy of 7" (6.950 to be exact) so I did not get a bell that was 7.050 depth as advertised.

Just another day of fabrication!

Same things I did except I didn't have an extra input shaft and I'm using a pilot bearing rather than a bushing.

Maybe I missed something in reading the thread. The bellhousng is advertised by Quicktime as being deep enough to accomodate the longer shaft of the Tremec? And it wasn't? Why not return the bell to Quicktime for one that has the advertised specs?

767; There are 2 different BHs for the application, one for the long shaft and one for the short. The problem is that the one for the short shaft is to short! LOL It may be a batch thing but we now have at least 2 with the same exact problem.

The bell was .100 shorter than advertised yes, but I was still .250 long on the input shaft so I would still need to cut the input shaft regardless. I can do that in 1 day as opposed to waiting a week for another bell to come in.
