Experience with Fidanza and Spec- clutches ?
Have any of you had experience with Fidanza or Spec clutches ( for a FE) ?
I want to compare them to McLeod & Ram. I have not used either. Never used the "Puck" style. I'll be purchasing a aluminum flywheel and clutch kit. Fidanza- FE=flywheel Fidanza- http://www.fidanza.com/Clutches.aspx SPEC- http://www.specclutch.com/products |

The Spec clutch will drive you nuts.
Any clutch disc that does not have a full diameter but instead is made like a cross, a 4-leaf clover, or a fan blade will probably have severe chatter and either off/on engagement. I put a Spec clutch in a customer's '03 Cobra Mustang and I vowed to never use one for a street application. Between the aluminum flywheel and that clutch, you'll be sick to your stomach. |

Several years ago I had trouble with several slipping clutches. The problem turned out to be a leaky HTOB which I have since fixed. But along the way, as I searched for a solution, I went with a SPEC Stage 3 clutch. I've been using it for more than five years in mostly street use with occasional track days. As Blykins said, it is an on/off type of clutch. It is very difficult to do a slow, smooth launch without chatter. Fortunately I live in a relative flat area and I've gotten use to the way it engages. I don't mind it and I like the way it holds under hard use, but its not for everyone. If you want a more traditional clutch feel, use something else.

You either want a McLeod twin disc or a RAM Powergrip HD for that amount of horsepower. The RAM will hold as much power as the Spec without all the bad street manners. I just sold Excaliber (Ernie) one for his Cobra....he seems to be very happy with it.
You could also probably get away with an 11" Long McLeod pressure plate and their 600 series disc. That combo would be rated for 600hp and it's still a full sprung hub disc. The RAM is going to be your cheapest option. |
I had a SPEC clutch put in my street car and it was absolutely terrible. I had it replaced 1 month later with a ACT clutch. SPEC was severely lacking in the customer service department as well.

Customer support/service should be #1 with every business.
I had a 30 second conversation with a cam company yesterday. We got in a fast argument about the brands I was looking into, to see what he had to offer. Told him he was an ass, and If he can't handle talking about comparisons, I told him to get the hell out of the business. I'v been using a Centerfoce Dual Friction for a few years. I make a lot of torque, and I road race whenever I can. I'm not gentle on the car at all. I replace the clutch whenever the engine is out, about every 2 years. The clutch disc and pressure plate are usually in good shape, but I replace them anyway.
It's an easy clutch to drive on the street and the track. Very smooth and linear, no chatter. Install and drive, nothing to adjust or worry about. It works so well, I'm afraid to try anything else. |
Yep, centerforce is the system I'm used to. I built a Pro-Street (remember those days) :3DSMILE:

Ask around about the Centerforce stuff for Cobras. They do not work well with light cars and you have to pay out the nose for their "centrifugal weights" that don't really add any performance capability at all. A lot of the guys have to remove the counterweights because they don't work.
Stick with a RAM or McLeod. They work. |
The Mcloed twin disc is the way to go, provided you can get the slave to work. Very easy to drive.

I went with recommendations and products, for my specific application, from Brent with all parts from flywheel to tranny. It all bolted up with no issues and is performing great.

I talked with Ram yesterday, and although they say they don't sponsor, he's very interested with my engine project and might come aboard. He'll call me next week.
I also have a call in to McLeod, and said to call on Monday. Most of these company's are on the Power Tour and will be back in the office next week. I'll see what happens with them. |
