Can't Push in Clutch?

So I test drove a '65 Cobra, 302, T-5 yesterday and could barely push in the clutch. It does not appear to be hydralic. If I go with this one how can I make the clutch easier to push in? Thanks!

We need to know what clutch is in the car. It may be a cable issues or it may be a really heavy clutch.

I will put it here once the seller lets me know. Thank you!

So...other than the clutch issue what did you think of the rest of the car ?????
how was the fit and finish and how did the motor sound, any issues with the way it rode (stiff or soft) the steering (solid or twitchy or hard to turn).???....what about the price???....who built it???

Steve,
Pressing the clutch pedal moves the diaphragm spring that holds the pressure plate against the flywheel. The formula is that the force applied to the spring multiplied times the distance it must travel to release the pressure plate is equal to the force applied to the clutch pedal multiplied by the distance the pedal travels. That means you can reduce the pedal pressure by either going to a weaker diaphragm spring (i.e., a new clutch), or by adjusting the pedal mechanism to give you a softer but longer pedal movement. ... If the mechaism between the pedal and the pressure plate (e.g., a cable system or hydraulic master/slave cylinder) is not working correctly or is sized wrong, it can also contribute to a heavy clutch pedal. That is why the previous poster asked for more details.

Well.... motor sounded good but an unkown oil leak coming from the back of the engine. :( It rode good did not feel to stiff at all. The steering was semi-easy (no PS but was ok) Power brakes are good.
Factory built at NAF in 1988. appr 20K miles and the price is under 20K too.
I did find one small spider crack around one of the chrome pieces. I believe this is where the soft top installs. 3 small chips in the paint that have been touched up. Once I get an idea of what the costs will be to fix the issues (pending not a major issue with the engine) I will go from there.

Well for under $20k i sounds like a real good starter car.....
oil leaks can be fixed....clutch issue sounds like where you might
have to spend a few bucks to fix that.....
dont know much about NAF other tan they where out of Arizona (i think)
and out of business....if you can post some pics..

I guess the clutch issue could be the pressure plate?

Once I can get all the figures together I can gauge if this one still fits in my budget. I liked the car. For a 302 it seemed to have some get up and go! I will post some pics later tonight. I do know for a fact the tires would need to be changed out. Too much space in the wheel wells...

I think someone did things a long the way so it wouldn't surprise me. The manufacturer plate has the interior as tan but now it's black.

Aedds,

Give yourself some time. You will build up that left leg muscle and look like Popeye's arms:).

If it were hydraulic, you could fit one of these
AUSTIN HEALEY/JAGUAR BRAKE BOOSTER/SERVO KIT-8"-LE10117 | eBay
I put a 3:1 ratio unit, pedal is firm, but not impossible.
The problem could be pedal design-the ratio between pivot to master cylinder contact point to foot end of pedal

Mark

Could be a bad pressure plate.

I had the same symptons,I was told to change the pressure plate,You would think it would be easier to push down if it's a weak pressure plate. I changed the disc and pressure plate and all is fine now,

Could be the pedal was designed for a booster and the builder did not put one on.

Don't let these guys shuck you to much but you do have options. You can start with the stiff clutch as a negotiating tool. New clutch and pressure plate $300 or less, new hyd throw out assembly about $500 or you could go a different route and go look at more cars. By the way just a shot in the dark but I would guess if you had someone do the labor for you you might be looking at over $500. If he say's he can fix it for $300 offer him an additional $300 with the clutch fixed but ask for all the used parts replaced.
