Rattling T-5 shifter primarily in 5th

My T-5 has had a rattling 5th gear since forever--no rattles in 4th, occasional rattles in 3rd, nothing in 1s or 2nd. Seems like the rattling is in the shifter. I've tightened the bolts attaching the shifter to the transmission, and attaching the shift lever to the shifter. Does not seem to help. Other than pulling the trans and opening it up, any suggestions?

Thanks

Does your handle use the factory rubber isolation to mount to the shifter tower stub? If not, that rubber isolator will solve your problems. A different style of aftermarket tower may work also. I am pretty confident that rattling is resonance in the handle and not an internal problem with the transmission.

Wolf:

To be clear, are you talking about rubber "washers" used with the mounting bolts for bolting the shift lever to the stub coming from the shifter; or are you talking about a rubber gasket or bead of RTV between the shifter mount plate and the transmission? Or?

Thanks,

There's a round ball on the end that wears--I put in a Pro 5.0 shifter and not only did the noise dissapear but she shifts MUCH better!

Bill, I was talking about the rubber isolation from stub to handle. Factory handle is rubber mounted to the stub so that there is no metallic connection handle to stub. However, this does give a sloppy feel to the shifter. Snakebittexan is talking about where the shifter tower mates internally with the shift rail and he has a good point also.

Ok, thanks guys, I'm going to upgrade my shifter.

Thanks

Upgraded from a UPR shift mechanism to the MGW. No rattle, feels great, short positive throws. Well done!

thanks
