xlr8or, that could be it but I would think that Barry (Survival) would have noticed that when he built the engine and dynoed it.
I talked to the tech dept of McLeod today and he confirmed that the diaphragm type of pressure plate they have (and that the Kirkhams use/recommend) is only 2 inches tall, compared to the 3" I have on this long style right now. So hopefully that will fix the problem.
