~not Cobra~ 2001 Chevy Tahoe Transmission failure
After a rough day lounging dining in Napa valley today, I was driving back with my wife to go untie the babysitter (Cameron! Not again!) Anyhow, I'm cruising down the highway with about 25 miles left to go and then, suddenly my Tahoe loses power to the wheels!:eek: I quickly scoot over from the far left lane to the nearest offramp and stopped. No gears. Not a one. No reverse, 1,2,3 or OD. Nothing!:confused:
Tow it home. $175 Having had a blown transmission in this vehicle before (ten years ago), I popped the hood and did the automatic transmission "sniff" test. The transmission fluid didn't smell burnt.:confused: The only odd thing was that when I looked a the fluid level it wasn't in the cross-hatched area near the bottom of the dipstick: the level was about 5" above the "safe zone".:confused: It hasn't been refilled lately. Anyone have anything similar happen on a Chevy Tahoe or related GM vehicle? Taking it to a shop tomorrow. Thought I see if anyone hear could shed some light on this issue. :confused:DD:confused: |
had a 1996 Tahoe that had a panetary eat a thrust bearing and fail --sounded about like your saying--lost all gears---I think that it would of worked if could of gotten past 1st gear into second range but woulden move either 1st or reverse---

Yeah, I tried all gears and they all feel like neutral.

Might be transfer case if its 4 wheel drive. Have a 2001 pickup that would not move and it was transfer case. No oil in case. The oil pump wears a hole in the case and you lose all oil. Common problem with G.M. The fix is a new case with stainless wear plate at oil pump. The hole will be at the bottom rear of case. 2001 pickup is company truck driven by employee, you would think they would see oil on driveway or back of truck? Have a 2006 pickup that I drive so first thing I did was check it out. The local G.M. dealer said the problem was addressed in later trucks, case has stainless wear plate .

If the failure is something that causes the trans to not build pressure, I would not be surprised to see a high fluid level. It would be similar to checking trans level with the engine off.
It is a realtively easy trans to change. I did my wifes 2000 Silverado some years back in 2-3 hours. It had just shy of 200k miles and the filter fell out in the pan. It lost 4th. The GM crate trans was less than $1500. John |
I spent less tha $100 for parts to fix ours----the broken part wasn't too much and I also replaced the drum it turned in cause these were some particals it the teeth grooves that I could of dug out but just replaced it

Catastrophic failure of the A/T pump---once piece pump came out in two pieces. Metal everywhere, secondary breakage.
