I've never had to dial in a bellhousing before, but have heard that the Lakewood must be done. Why is that ?

Not sure why the link is not working. One thing though are the dowels that this sight recommends. They are expensive at $28 a pair but they are so much better than the Lakewood dowels. Take a look at them at Welcome to RobbMc Performance Products, I just checked this link and it worked for me. Look under products and you will see dowels.

It's been awhile since I did this, but IMHO if you disregaurd the 12O'clock position as zero, and check your runout to find the lowest reading and mark it, zero your indicator there, you will get the maximun runout at 180 degrees from there. This helps by showing exactly how much offset you need in the dowels, (1/2 of the total runout) and exactly which direction to install the dowels. (in line with the high to low reading) In my experience this works the first time around, though it maybe takes a little more time to get the reading. It's easier to rotate the engine a couple of times to double check the readings and high and low points, than to install and remove the scattershield several times. As always recheck to confirm. Note that the flywheel does not have to be on the crank to perform this operation, and your magnetic base may fit easier on the bare crank.

Just my $0.02, Good luck!
