short or long input shaft
Hello all, I have measured everything I can think of and I believe i have the long input shaft in my TKO. From the trans housing to the tip of the input shaft it is 7.25 inches. The depth of the bellhousing is 6.75 (where the trans mates and to where the block mates). So I have a .5 inch protrusion that is MUCH less than the depth of the crankshaft hole where the pilot bushing goes. I have a 351C and if I read the threads correctly only the 427 needs a short input shaft. Correct? Thanks

As I understand it, the length of the input shaft is dictated by the depth of the bell housing. The short input shaft is for when the Tremec is replacing a toploader 4 speed trans. and you are using a stock depth bellhousing. The long input shaft is for when you are using a later model bell housing that was used in conjunction with a T-5 type trans, or an aftermarket bell housing that is deeper than stock. Right now, I am using a stock depth toploader bell housing with the short shaft. When I install my FE engine I will be changing out the input shaft with the long shaft, because I'm using the Quicktime bell housing that calls for the longer shaft. So, in closing, determine which bell housing you have and go from there.
