Hydraulic clutch problem / parts
My hydraulic clutch went out and I'm having trouble finding parts. I have a BRA Cobra built in 1988 with a 327 short block Chevy engine. The system had two masters, a slave and a booster. The original slave was a 3520-.87 Girling, one of the masters was a Girling (no part#). The other master was a Lockheed with a casting number of Q359 and another 323265C. The Lockheed booster had #3288-515 on it. Transmission is marked T 10H-1 W.G. Div. Q1 and I have a Muncie 4 spd gear box. Unable to find a booster and master cylinders. The Girling slave was replaced with the same part. I would appreciate any help that you can give. -- Richard

Any chance you could just change them out for Wilwood units? Just measure the bore and go to Wilwood's site and find the comparable unit.
In fact, I have a couple Wilwood 7/8" master cylinders I'm looking to get rid of that I had forgotten about. They are the 260-3376 model. Bob |
Bob -- Thanks for your response. It seems that after trying to match previous components it may be better to star over with a new system. What do I know about hydraulic clutches? Really nothing. I am trying to find a system that will work with my Cobra. The problem is that the parts dealers/manufacturers have systems for specific cars, but not for kit or custom built cars. So what do they need to know to supply a system that will work? Apparently it's more complicated than I thought. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks for your help. -- Richard

Depends on how much you're willing to change. I have a set of Wilwood hanging Pedals and a couple 7/8" master cylinders that would work if you want to go that route. Bought them for my build but couldn't use them in the original style foot boxes. I needed to go with a floor mounted pedal box in the end. Are yours floor mounted or overhead mounted?
If you just want to use the original equipment and change out the cylinders, check to see what bolt spacing they mount on and check to see if the Wilwood or Tilton (same bolt spacing) will fit your existing set up. Check the tech page for the different styles of master cylinders and it will give dimensions of the units including the bolt spacing. There are many different styles to choose from. The next thing is to check to see what bore your master cylinders are. Most are marked on the casting. If this fails, you will need some information like what diameter and the number of brake pots you have in the rear and the front and call Wilwood tech number. They will help you match up the bore size you need for your system. Then there will be a few miscellaneous parts like brake line adapters or fittings to fit them to your system. It really isn't that difficult once you see how it all goes together. Unless you really want to, you really don't need to use any particular manufacturer as long as the mounting provisions are the same. Many of the older stuff is obsolete and can't be found anyway (as you found out), so it may be a good time to upgrade to readily available parts. Do you have any pics of your existing pedal/cylinder set up now? It might help in recommending a particular style or part number of cylinder. Bob |
Pegasus has Girling stuff available. It sounds like a cylinder style/model with a bore size.
https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...p?Product=3520 for the clutch. The other master cylinder with booster is obviously brakes being boosted and by Lockheed. |
Thanks for your help. The pedals are floor mounted. It appears that the clutch does have two masters a slave and a booster. The brakes are separate. I believe that all the parts are 7/8" or .87". the slave has been replaced with the same Girling (3520-.87). So is the booster necessary? If not, what would be the appropriate masters. -- Richard

I have never seen a clutch with a booster. Try following some of the lines and see where they go from and to. If you could get a couple of pictures and post them it would help us all. If you can't post them you could e-mail them to me.

I suspect that Richard is seeing a floor-mounted brake master cylinder (single) activating a remote booster. He just has to figure out which master down there is really for the clutch.

Just a little confusion???????:)
