t56 trans
Does anybody know if a t56 trans will work well with a 427 fe with 3:50 rear end gears.

Yes, of course it will...

I would not do it. I would go with a 5 speed. I do not know the power band of your engine, but my guess is driving down the highway in 6th gear will put your engine at around 1950 RPM at 70 mph with a 26.5" tall tire and .63 final gear, or 1550 RPM with a .50 final gear.
I have one in my car and either 1st gear is worthless, or 6th gear is worthless depending on the axle gear ratio. |
I went through the same math and decided to go with a TKO-600 with 0.82 OD and a 3.54 rear. I also considered a 3.31 rear. The numbers are as follows:
* 3.54 and 0.82 with 26.6" tire run at 2400 RPM at 65 MPH and 71 MPH at 2600 RPM * 3.31 and 0.82 with 26.6" tire run at 2200 RPM at 65 MPH and 70 MPH at 2400 RPM Keep in mind my engine uses solid rollers and is optimized to rev a bit higher (up to 7200 RPM). Also, these engines have so much torque that I didn't feel the need for 6 speeds. Here is the Tremec calculator, FYI: http://www.tremec.com/calculadora.php |
I've got 427ci, the close-ratio T56 Magnum, & 3.54 gears... the T56 is the best mod I've done in the 14 years I've had the car... along with fuel injection.
To see if it will work for your combination, find an online gear ratio calculator to see the rpm @ different speeds for each gear. |
