!help!
I have a 93 mustang and am now on my 4th throwout bearing!!! when i got the car it was a 4 cyl 5 speed. I did a 5.0 swap and used the 4 cyl trans with of course a different bellhousing, it has a factory 5.0 flywheel, clutch fork, and pressure plate ,new clutch,new bbk adjustable clutch cable with firewall adjuster and quadrant... when i adjust it to where the throwout bearing is NOT making contact with the pressure plate it wont go in gear?? but when its adjusted enough to go in gear its constantly riding the pressure plate!! I read that the new style bearings are designed to constantly turn but mine is not? correct??

I am not sure about the throw out bearing turning all the time but it is possible since they have changed so many things. But to me it sounds more as if you don't have enough leverage to engage and disengage the clutch properly. Maybe a different clutch fork or something along that line which would give you an extra 1/2 to 1/2 inch adjustment would help. Also when I won't go into gear, is it locked out completely or will it go into gear if you grind the gears?

I take it the guys over on the Mustang forums were unable to help you solve your clutch problem, and that is the reason you decided to drop in here, where we are all about vintage style Shelby Cobras. Fortunately for you, some of the guys here know a thing or two about Mustangs too, and maybe one of them will be able to help you. In the mean time, if you have not already posted your question on every Ford forum you could find in a shotgun blast attempt to get a quick answer, perhaps you should try a Mustang forum. .... BTW, I don't know anything about 93 Mustangs. Sorry. |
The 4 cyl trans has a different diameter on the input shaft for the pilot bearing. It is smaller than the 8 cyl. When removing the trans you will notice that the input shaft has rubbed the throw-out bearing sleeve , because premature failure of the input shaft bearing.

go to the parts store and ask to see a pilot bearing for a 4 cyl and a 5.0.

I noticed the different size pilot bearing during the second teardown .. and when the cable is adjusted enough that the throwout bearing is NOT making contact with the pressure plate fully released i can push the pedal all the way to the floor and it just wnt go in any gear... it does not grind though.. and yes ive tried SEVERAL different mustang sights and a few ppl say the bearing is supposed to turn constantly and then a few say it isnt .. im kind of lost here,
