Toploader Shifter linkage for 289 FIA
Does anyone know if Dan Williams is still in business? Looking for Toploader linkage for 289 FIA car.

Which tail shaft are you using?

04zr-7a040-a out of a 67-68 mustang close ratio box

Ok, that's a different tail housing than would have been used when retrofitting a top loader transmission to an original style chassis.
|
Let me correct that, its a C4ZR-7A040-A.

I think the correct tailhousings are: C6OR-7A040-C C7OR-7A040-A DOZR-7A040-A or DK's own 'DKT' ....but I could be wrong. Anybody else have info? Cheers, Glen |
It's unlikely the shifter location will look right with that tailhousing in any 289 Cobra chassis. Consider using one of the following for your build.
Tailhousing ID Chart #1 C4AR-7A040 A 1964-67 Galaxie 289, 390, 17" length, 28 spline. #2 C4OR-7A040 A 1964 and 65 Fairlane, Tiger, Griffith, TVR , 15 1/2" length, 28 spline. Hope this helps. |

Are you talking about prp's tailhousing, or those that I suggested? Surely on a Cobra replica, the longer the tail SHAFT, the better, so the 14" tail housing that prp is thinking of, or the 14" THs I'm suggesting (and DK's website suggests) are better than either a 17" or 15-1/2"? It's just where the shifter is located that's an issue. Cheers, Glen |

In an original style chassis, the tailhousings you've listed will place the shifter ≈2" further back from the correct location. I know that doesn't sound like much but it's actually quite noticeable (at least to me). But whether the 2" difference is good or bad will obviously depend on the chassis used as well as personal taste. I hope this helps. |

Any chance of you (or anybody else?) measuring the distance from your engine / scattershield interface back to the vertical centreline of the shifter? Gearbox type doesn't matter, I just want to work out the correct shifter location and then source the appropriate Toploader tailhousing. This will probably help prp289 as well :) Cheers, Glen |
Thanks for the responses. The Tail shaft is 14 inches, the front of tranny to first shifter mount bolt is 19 inches. Going to call ERA to see if they have a adapter plate. Is changing rear housing hard to do and find? Thanks again...

From what I've seen on David Kee's website, you have the correct length tailhousing. Information on shifter location is hard to track down. Bob is a good person to ask....and Bill Healey's name keeps coming up too. Cheers, Glen |
