Tremec TKO won't shift into gear while running
After sitting in the garage over the winter my cobra won't shift into gear while running. All good when not running and no problems the last time I had it out. Thinking maybe the pressure plate? Any sugestions on freeing it it up?

Clutch slave cylinder is likely not activating fully. Check the fluid in the clutch reservoir first. If it is low or out you have a leak.

If you've had it stored in a humid environment, sometimes the disc will rust to the flywheel.

Thanks Bill, I Haven't checked the fluid but will tonight. If it's the disc or pressure plate any way of freeing it without taking it apart?

Try rocking the car forwards and backwards with the car in gear. May take several attemps on a flat level surface and a couple of friends to help with the momentum.

Seen this many times with many different cars.
Get the car in a safe environment to drive forward with ample room. Warm the engine, then stop the engine, clutch in, 1st gear, start engine, car will move forward on the starter motor, as soon the engine fires, the clutch should become normal. May make a bang on release. |
I prefer using top gear or in the Tremec case whichever ratio is 1 to 1, less chance of trans/driveline damage.
Jack car up under diff with wheels clear of ground. Start and run at ~30mph with foot on clutch pedal, drop car, job done usually. Make sure you have room to steer & brake if it doesn't work first time. I used to work in a shop that had many long term projects where this was a regular occurrence, Boss always thought I was real quick at clutch replacements- not sure if he ever found out what I was really doing!:) |
