Which Shifter Kit
I have a CR Toploader on my Kirkham with the long tail-shaft housing and the three mounting lugs halfway along. This is a picture from the David Kee website:
http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/im...tail_small.jpg It uses a Hurst Competition Plus shifter and a modified Hurst 8382 mounting plate and I've never been happy with the position of the lever. Although it comes up in the centre of the hole in the tunnel, the lever is too upright, which means I'm having to pull my arm too far back to be really comfortable.. It also has a habit of jumping out of 3rd gear on the overrun, which I suspected was due to the rubber boot, but I've just discovered that there isn't sufficient throw on the 3rd gear lever on the Hurst shifter to allow it to fully engage. Can anyone tell me which combination of parts I need to mount the lever in the right place and allow full movement of the selector levers? Thanks, Paul |

Paul, regarding the top loader lever, you should have the OEM style Ford Mustang lever and it should be reversed. I've attached a photo of my car's lever as an example. The lever in the photo is in neutral, and I have pushed the boot down so you can see the bend. If you have a OEM style lever that is not reversed, then an easy fix is at hand.
I'm not sure about the 3rd gear issue, if you have reached the extent of adjustment on the rod. The rods are adjustable at both ends, I believe. I had this issue with a Tremec on my ERA and I had to go to a leather boot to avoid the spring effect of the rubber bellows. Sam |
Hi Sam,
Thank you for the response. I have the lever in the correct orientation, the problem is with the location and angle of the Hurst shifter. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...PSN0066-sm.jpg The lever is in the neutral position, so when it comes back into second and forth, it is too far back to be really comfortable. The problem with third is that there doesn't seem to be enough movement in the shifter itself and nothing to do with the adjustment or length of rods. I've even backed off the stops to see if that was the issue, but it didn't improve matters. What does everyone else use? Paul |
Come on guys, of all the Cobras out there surely someone must be able to shed some light on this for me.
BTW I've fixed the issue with the limited travel on 3rd gear. One of the shim plates on the Hurst shifter had been put in the wrong way round and it was preventing the lever going all the way forward. Paul |
i have a jordan shifter on mine....love it

Hi,
I've had a look at the Jordan shifter, but I want to retain the original looks. Thanks for the input though. Paul |
Wish I could help, Fatboy.
The only thing I can do is bump this thread to the top. ;) |
Appreciated. :)
