Flywheel Ring Gear Install
I have searched the internet more broadly to find this answer but I trust you guys a lot more:
I am replacing my flywheel ring gear on my 5 speed tremec; seems like heating in an oven is smarter, i.e. more controlled, than trying to heat it with a torch.
Any reason I shouldn't heat it to 450 degrees or so without affecting the metallurgy? Or any other reason? Anybody done it this way? What was your optimal temp?
Putting the flywheel in the freezer seems like it won't help much and maybe too much of a confrontation with a too hot ring gear...thoughts?

Just heat 1/4 of the outer edge and drop it on. Doubt the oven thing would work.

You can safely heat it to 400 Fahrenheit without any metallurgical change. That should be enough to allow it to drop onto a room temperature flywheel. You will need to go from oven to flywheel pretty quickly, as the ring will cool quickly.

flywheel gear install
I just put my new gear on my outdoor grille and turned the heat up. After a few minutes, I picked it up with a pair of pliers and dropped in on the room temperature flywheel. It fit easily and snugged up after just a few minutes. Twenty-four years later, it hasn't given any trouble.

Update: I put the ring gear in the oven for 25 minutes at 425 degrees and put the flywheel in the freezer for the same amount of time.
The ring gear snugly fit right over the flywheel. Didn't have to hit with a hammer. Just slide over. I wasn't able to spin it when i got it on though. Would have like to been able to do that to make sure it seated well. Maybe 475 degrees would have been better.

You are either single or have a very tolerant wife. At my house I doubt an Cobra parts are going in the oven or the freezer, LOL.

Did it last summer. We used a torch. There are YouTube videos showing the process. I don't have a giant rosebud torch so it took a bit to get it heated up for removal but, it was a pretty simple operation, all said & done.
