Stuck in Gear
Thought I had a bad slave cylinder but I bled and adjusted clutch, but I am still stuck in gear. The shifter acts like it's in neutral, but I am in first gear. Push in the clutch tires don't turn, let out in neutral and tires turn. Looking for recommendations and causes...

Not knowing what transmission and shifter you have, this is a wild guess. On my car the shifter moves the linkages and the linkages move the arms on the transmission that shift the gears. If I were you, I'd examine those parts to see if any were either disconnected or misadjusted.

I saw in your profile your have a Tremec. I did a couple of Tremec stuck in 1st gear searches. Most hits all came back a broken shifter fork inside the tranny.
All were stuck in 1st and although felt like neutral when actually not. I'm pasting the top 3 but there are dozens and dozens with that issue. Thanks, I will pull the trans tomorrow and see if I can pop the covers and drain the fluid. I will be looking for a Tremec repair shop..

I am in Columbus Ohio and no transmission shops are open today. Any recommendations on who could do the repairs? If I cannot find one, I may try it myself.

Ok pulled the transmission out and the only thing I found was the broken nylon clips and an O-ring that was bad. Anything else I should look for? I will call TRemec for parts on Monday.

"I purchased a new TKO600 for my build. These transmissions are quite stiff to shift when new. They are shipped without transmission fluid so you need to keep that in mind. Initially when I tried running though the gears, the shifter fork got stuck and the transmission would not shift. I called Tremec and they told me to take the shifter plate off and check that the shifter sliders are properly aligned for the shifter fork lever. you may want to call them or search the net for proper shifter alignment instructions. As it turns out, the Tremec tech was correct and the transmission shifter sliders became misaligned with the shifter fork. I believe (if memory is correct - several years ago now) I had to manually align the shifter sliders so they were in a straight line (neutral) and I inserted the shifter fork and reinstalled the shifter plate. I used a slot screw driver to carefully slide the shifter sliders back the the proper neutral position (aligned in a straight line from left to right). if your shifter lever can move from side to side and when you turn the input shaft the output shaft does not move (you may need to hold the output shaft to keep from rotating) you are in neutral and there is no misalignment. if as you describe, the shifter moves side to side but when rotating the input shaft the output shaft moves in the opposite direction, the transmission would seem to be in reverse - suggesting the shifter fork is misaligned with the shifter sliders - similar issue as I had." It happens alot during shipping when we send TKO's to our customers. For you, your shifter is mounted on the tailhousing. Directly in front of the shifter assembly, there is a silver anodized access cover with 4 black bolts holding it down. Remove the 4 bolts and the cover. Inside you will see 3 shift rails and 3 shift dogs mounted on the rails. 1 of those dogs is out of line with the other 2. Which ever one is out of line, using a flat tip screwdriver, pop it back in line so all 3 are lined up. Essentially what that does is throw the tranny in nuetral. Once you've done this, before you re-seal the cover, check and make sure you can shift through all of the gears. Then add a bead of RTV to the cover and re-install it. Problem solved. Like I said it is not uncommon for the shift fingers to get bound up during shipping. This does not mean you will have any issues once it is installed. |

I actually had to remove those to allow the cover to come off with the forks. I plan to replace the nylon tabs and then put it back together and make sure it will go through all gears. Pics below.

The troubleshooting matrix page 41 of the manual has
Problem: "Transmission locked one gear, cannot be shifted out of that gear" Possile source: Internal parts worn, Bent shifter forks at pads (your pads were jamming and required removal to get the cover off?), Selector arm finger broken (item A45 on page 5 in the parts manual) |
That finger was not broken, just the fork pads. I am going to replace those and likely the shifter and see if it shifts smoothly out of the car. That pads can cause it to lock in gear as well according to Paul Cangialosi (a Tremec repair guru).

I replaced the fork pads and shifter and 1st 2nd shift rail and it all works great. Much smoother shifting.
