G-Force T5 Gear Set??!!

Has anyone tried one of these...
https://www.jegs.com/i/G-Force-Trans...5-93S/10002/-1

Apparently good for 600HP or 500 FtPounds in a 3300 pound car. I’m having trouble believing that and am curious if anyone has ever tried this gear set?

Also- who’s eaten through a standard T5? Is it good to have a spare? 😂

Cheers
Michael

With the T5 you’ll still need a billet cluster support to get rid of the pressed steel flimsy unit.. https://www.astroperformance.com/pro...support-plate/
After all that, the limiting factor is case flex.

I'm about to buy this set:https://www.jegs.com/i/G-Force-Trans...2-93S/10002/-1
I like the gear ratios better. I'll have Gordon Levy build it.

I had a WC T5 backing up 450/500 383 SBC stroker in my Cobra for 18+ years of almost daily spirited driving. When I first bought the car and rebuilt it, the next plan was always to upgrade to a Tremec/FE combo.
I drove the crap out of it fully expecting the T5 to fail, but it never did; and the combination worked so well and gave me so much satisfaction that the FE upgrade with 100% + importation duties and tariffs was simply not justifiable. In a heavier car, I'm sure that little T5 would've eventually shat itself, but in the lightweight Cobra, it was in its element. Still going strong today.
EDIT - I also looked into the G Force upgrade, but that never happened either.

That’s great to know. Thank you for the input. I wondered how much difference 1000+ pounds lighter would make on longevity. Apparently a fair bit. What year is your T5?? There were a bunch of variations over the years(5 I think if you include the T5z) that made them stronger. But I think they still max rated for 300 lb-ft and 330 lb-ft for the Z at the peak

The G force rating seems pretty optimistic. There is no room to increase gear thickness or diameter since the package is the same.

Changing the type of steel and post processing will only increase torque capacity by a small amount.

I would be really curious to see what Ford or GM would rate a G force at.

You might want to check this out: https://www.gforcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp

Generally, it can be assumed that with the available upgraded mainshaft, the G-Force Street 5-Speed kit will handle roughly 600 hp or 500 ft-lb. of torque in a 3300 lb. vehicle running drag radials at the track with a moderate clutch upgrade. Obviously this is just a rough estimate regarding the power and torque handling capability, but it should give some idea as to what the G-Force Street 5-Speed kit will handle in your particular application.

I started with a used stock WC T5 in 2002 with a 302 pushing about 350 HP and TQ at the wheels. That T5 didn't last long. Maybe it was on it's way out from the Mustang GT it came from - who knows. I had it rebuilt with G-Gorce gears about 2004. Many spirited track sessions later including engine swap to a 408W, a guest driver helped to loose a few teeth in 3rd gear while shifting. Also toasted the counter shaft. Had them replaced with new G-Force parts. Since then have had no issues. I now have a SHP 408 dry sump pushing better than 550 HP and TQ. The tranny is handling it well. By the way, the tires will also have a bearing on tranny gear life. I'm Running Nitto NT01 rubber on the street and BFG R1S on the track. If you run street tires the tranny should last even longer.

So now to get 600hp capability, we need a $1500 gear set AND an available mainshaft upgrade? Another $500+?

Why not just buy a TKO 5 speed?

I don't remember the exact year but I was told it came from an 80's Camaro with a stock 5.7. I'll add that I never ran slicks on the rear and I put it through countless hard launches on both asphalt and concrete.

Grubby 08-06-2020 06:49 PM

GM never put a T5 behind a 5.7. They couldn't handle the torque.

In the early 90's, prior to the T-56, you could only get an automatic transmission in a 5.7 liter Camaro.

Buzz 08-06-2020 07:26 PM

If that's the case, then I guess I was misinformed. Pretty sure it did come from a Camaro though.

Grubby 08-07-2020 07:23 AM

Buzz,

T5s were certainly used in many 3rd generation Camaros and Firebirds, just not with the 5.7 V8. I actually had an 89 Formula Firebird with a 5.0 V8 and T5.

I was attempting to make the point that T5s weren't considered to be up to handling the torque of a really mild 5.7 by GM.

I got it John - no worries at all :) . I was told that the Camaro had a "350" and I accepted without bothering to research. It was already in the Cobra and running when I acquired it.
I had an '85 Trans Am with the 5.0 and 5 speed (after owning a couple of 455 powered '74s and a 4 speed '82). I was into Firebirds going way back to the first time I saw a picture of a red '68 400 convertible in a Reader's Digest as a kid. Never really cared for the Camaro - in the days of division specific engines at GM, I actually grew up seeing Camaros as a rival.

Weight and superior shifter are two reasons.
