toploader shift problem

Some time ago, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, it wouldn't go into third, it was like the shifter hit a brick wall, no grinding, just like the gear was locked out.
I did the shift alignment, no discrepancies noted, but now it does it more frequently.
Have a call in to David Key, no response yet.

When the toploader was installed, was it new, rebuilt, or used. My first guess is that it is a synchronizer issue. Sometimes, the clutch is not disengaged completely.

Antony; Thanks for the input. Tranny has about 4k mi since rebuild.
I think youre on target with the clutch, That's what I just replaced ? reworked.
Can't check it right now, as I'm re-jetting the webers, and don't have the new jets yet. I'll
post after next drive.

Will it do this sitting still in your driveway? If so I would Jack it up and replicate the blocking, shut it off, climb underneath and pull the rod off the transmission lever and see if you can manually move the transmission lever into 3rd. If it goes into 3rd OK then it’s probably a shifter issue, but if not then probably an internal transmission issue. The interlock rods and shift detents are another potential area but if it was rebuilt and shifted fine for 4K miles I would think they are OK.

Testing clutch disengagement: With the vehicle stopped, transmission in neutral and the engine running depress the clutch, wait a few seconds, then put the transmission in reverse. Reverse doesn't have a syncro like the forward gears. If you feel the gears grinding/hitting before they engage then your clutch is not fully disengaging. Also, check the bushings where the shifter rods connect to the shift arms, a worn/missing bushing could cause interlock issues, even if the shifter is aligned properly. Hope it's an easy fix.

Did an adjustment on the slave push rod, shifting seems ok now.
Thanks for the help.
