Shorter Length TKX Shift Lever Option?
1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone have a source for a shorter length Tremec compatible shifter? If not, I will have to modify my current unit to better represent the original Toploader shifter lever length. I attached an image for reference.

I built 838 last year. I looked high and low and even ordered a shifter that was claimed to be shorter.
My conclusion is they are all about the same. I cut mine off just below the bend and welded it back. If I remember correctly it shortened it almost 2 inches. Another 1” would make it perfect, but getting into the bend would make it look odd. The handle was mild steel and easy to weld. John |
Perhaps you can try one like I have, like this one:

Again, 289 or 427? Those following this thread need to know.

Oddly, I had two older ERAs - 178 and 755. Both shifters seemed to be shorter than 838. One car had a T5 and the other a TKO.
I asked Peter P if they had change suppliers. He didn't think the shift handles had changed back as far as he could remember. FYI, I used a MIG welder and was able to not damage any chrome that showed. John |

I used an 8" Hurst shifter turned forward. It comes with a 3" bend to the rear but for the Cobra I turned it the other way to resemble the original shape and get it in the correct position.
Mike Forte carries them. https://fortesparts.com/product/roun...t-shift-lever/ |
Oops.. Double post.

After much experimentation with the bandsaw and the Bridgeport, I have determined that the optimum length for the gear shift lever is Zero. My knob now sits directly atop the Control Lever. https://i.imgur.com/pS1vdj7.jpg

Here is an update. I am using the 1 inch offset White Lighting Shifter assembly. This helped me get the shifter from over the transmission to the side like the top loader. Not perfect, but close. I cut the Tremec 2 bolt "tab" off the shifter handle at the weld. Then I cut off the matching "tab" for the shifter assembly and welded the shifter directly to what was left of the "tab" that lets the shifter handle bolt to the offset arm.
As you can see it cured the length/height issue. However, I still may angle the handle further further and not so up right restoring the more up and down shifting motion and not so back and forth. My shifter hole was butchered to begin with. Therefore I always knew I was going to have to repair and re-carpet it. So I cannot offer insights in regards to that. More than happy to address any TKX from Top Loader swap questions. |
