Bellhousing alignment

I'm installing a FE 427 in my cobra with a Richmond 4+1 5speed and a Lakewood bellhousing (from my 428) has anyone perform an alignment? if so how far off from the centerline can I expect?

Lakewood's are notoriously off center, expect a large rectification to be required. Google it, there are several methods of correction.

The industry standard for manual transmissions like the Richmond 5-speed is a maximum of .005" (5 thousandths) total runout. They can be out as much as 0.050".

Here's an interesting thread. Posts 10 and 16 in particular. More about alignment than the thread title would suggest.

My Quicktime bell was out. I don't remember by how much. I used the Lakewood weld on washers to get an acceptable total indicated runout.

I view this as a permanent fix. The offset dowels might need fused with each time the bell is removed.

Just plan on checking the runout with a dial indicator. Then go from there. There are offset dowel pins available from many manufacturers. I highly suggest, regardless of price two options. Either the Lakewood offset dowels or RobbMC offset dowels. The Lakewood options fit the block very well and are accurate. I drilled a tapped a small set screw in the block to keep the pins in place so whenever I have to pull the bellhousing, they stay in place. The RobMC dowels have a center set screw inside the dowel that are nice, I was going to go that route as well.

Here is chapter and verse on how to do this job and what you need to shoot for, click here =>http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/1425538-post9.html. Do not be put off by the cast-iron flywheel nomenclature. The write-up on bell housing alignment is excellent, if I do say so;)

Is this on the other site, Ed? Perhaps it would be good to port it over there for easy access during those dark times in this area of the web... if you know what I mean! :JEKYLHYDE
