A few words for the T5Z

One of these days Tremec will make a close ratio gearset. In the meantime 1st is too low, 5th is too high, and the differential between the T5Z, and any of the Tremecs is marginal.

After extensive discussion with Joe Liberty of Liberty Transmissions, went with blueprinted T5Z (2.95 low, and .80 5th).

The gear ratios are all right with a 3.55 rear. Trans shifts like a Honda using synthetic ATF. The way I drive the car (daily driver, tweaked 351), trans should last forever.

Don't monkey see, monkey do, because everybody else is doing it.

T5Z is a great trans for a street Cobra. All you've heard about T5's breaking was with 1,000 lb heavier cars, and OEM T5's. The T5Z is not OEM supplied as a production Mustang trans, so you won't find them in junkyards.

Seriously consider the T5Z as opposed to the Tremec.

Me? It's great!

Jack21....

I have to agree with you!! I have a T5-Z behind my 408W and other than the gut wrenching torque in 3rd (which I have worried about), the trans has held up for a year!!

I install magnetic plugs in all fluid compartments in all of my cars and the T5-Z plug has never had any metal on it....So I must assume it is OK??!!

I don't race the car but know of a lot of folks that do and unless you miss gears, the old T5's even hold up well!!

I like mine but the OD is too tall.....0.63:1 gives me 65MPH at 1600 RPM's in 5th. May go to 4:10 gears later.

Jack:) :) :D :D

Glad to hear your T5Z is holding up well behind your 408. Part of my reluctance to upgrade to 393W was pushing trans too far. I like the T5Z. Gearing, and shifting, is superb. Guess if it lives with your 408, it should live with 393.

The .80 fifth optional gearset is readily available, and should get your cruise in the 2100 - 2500 RPM range.
