Trans cooler and oil cooler placement?
Gentlemen,
I'm putting a built C4 in my 66 JCF behind a 347 stroker. The question of trans coolers enters the picture. I bought a 21000 GVW B&M transcooler from a local speed shop and a smaller B&M oil cooler as well. My replica does not have the front brake cooling vents cut into the body, although that won't be a major problem to fix. The trans will have a 3000 rpm stall speed torque convertor, and I'm a little concerned with the inherent heat problem. Can I mount the coolers pretty much anywhere as long as they have sufficient air flow. If I mount them side by side in the grill cavity they will almost completely block the air to the radiator. In a Pantera I once had we mounted the oil cooler slightly above the right rear wheel-of course the Pantera is rear engined and we didn't have the plumbing problems we will have with the front engined Cobra. What about mounting a seperate electric fan for each cooler? Any thoughts will be always appreciated. Thanks Harris |

Here's a URL that may help a little: Draw-Tite coolers It shows a cooler added downstream of the radiator's cooler if you have one (which I do). If you only have the external cooler, there are models made by B&M and others with built-in fans that should be pretty durable as they are sold for tow vehicles and motor homes. I guess you also need to decide how much abuse the trans needs to take :eek: If there's a lot of racing involved you probably need all the cooler-power you can install. If it's 99% Saturday night cruisin', maybe the cooler can be a bit smaller. Since you are using a fairly high stall converter, my opinion would be to use a bit of overkill in the cooler, as the more stall you run, the hotter the oil will be. Hope this helps, Tom |
