Is a t-5 strong enough?

Sorry for the redundancy if you read this question in Drako's thread, I'm new here and posted my question in the wrong place.

I have a rebuilt T-5 that is that came from a 6cyl mustang, my cobra has a 435hp 351w and the specs for the T-5 look to weak for this application. The car is not rolling yet so trading it for a new tranny is an option. Would a TKO, TKOII or a TR3550 be best. The car is being built for the street and I want it easy to shift and highway drivable. I've been alerted to the modifications from G-force but it looks pretty expensive compared to trading transmissions. My transmission guy says he will trade me for what I want but I need to tell him what I need.

Also, where is the best place to get a bell housing, clutch and shifter to mate up with what I need.

Thank you very much

Terry

I just broke a T5 and replaced it with a TR3550 from Forte's part connection. They have the belhousings(McLeoed) and shifters(Pro 5.0). With the 3550 you can run a clutch made for the T-5 as it has the same spline. They ran the 3550 in the Cobra Mustang.

The T-5's third gear let go at a short road course and that was with my pretty Mild(267rear wheel HP) 302. Forte's said the 3550 was fine unless I was running a supercharger then they advised a TKO.

One word of advise is to look into changing the OD gear to a .80 if you plan on road racing the Cobra. The .63 OD gear kills acceleration at speed. On the street it is great but at 120mph on the track it just kills acceleration.

The 3550 is a big improvement over the T-5 and will hold up to most all small blocks up to about 450hp. Your engine is borderline.

Also the word on the shifter that comes with any Tremic is they are very sloppy. I ordered a Pro 5.0 shifter with my tranny so I never used the stock Tremic shifter

Looks like the TKO may be the way to go. My motor has the ability to produce up to 560hp with a different cam so if I get a wild hair or decide to sell the car to someone who changes the horsepower I would hate to see it get torn up. Since I have no accessories for the trany I can change without too much trouble.

Thanks for the advice!

I use a 3550 in mine. I have a Bennett racing 351 svo stroker 505hp/485 torque in mine. The 3550 holds up just fine. I would recommend mcleod all the way. Don't under build the car it will come back to bite you in the as$ with more $$'s. Both John Bennett and Brian @ B & B said that tranny will handle the motor without any problems... so from there on out it becomes driver error. :D

Is there any difference in the way the car shifts between the 3550 and the tko's as far as normal street driving goes?

Wade Chamberlain 08-18-2003 09:01 AM

nope. The only differences between the 3550 and TKO are the input and ouput shafts. Everything else is the same.

My tranny guy is letting me trade the rebuilt t-5 for a tko or 3550. For an additional charge of course, but at least i'm getting what I need.

Thanks for all your help

Terry
