Transmission Noises - Need Opinions

Hi - I'm new here and wanted to benefit from the great knowledge-base you guys share.

My T5 is in need of a rebuild (at the very least). It makes quite a racket when the engine is started, "whines" in 1st & 2nd gears and can be hard to shift when it has warmed up. Lately though, I have noticed a "knocking" noise that seems to be coming from the tranny (I hope!!) under hard acceleration. This noise does not happen when idling, cruising at part-throttle, or under moderate acceleration.

Assuming this is not rod or main bearings(!), has anyone else experienced this noise from their T5?

Thanks in advance!
