Toploader / Hurst shifters questions
1. Can the gear stick be removed on a Hurst 391-3180 (Mustang Type) shifter to enable installation of a short straight stick, or is it a cut and weld job.
2. Can Hurst shifters be dismantled and re-assembled, we all know that Hurst say it should not be done, but hey us Cobra guys like to fiddle. 3. Is a Street Super shifter better than an Indy shifter for Cobra application, Pt No 391-7535 versus 503-0031 (These seem to be the most suitable options for a 289 FIA with toploader and short straight stick). Andy, I'm no expert by any means...but I do think you can take them apart...check out www.toploaderheaven.com ....it talks about how to disassemble them, diagnose them, and clean them. Also, I think you can change shifter handles pretty easily....I think it's just a big pin that goes through the bottom of it that connects it...

I kept slamming my hand into the dash when shifting so I had Mark Harmon at Toploader Heaven cut down a stock hurst shifter cut down to about 6" and weld a mounting plate on the bottom. I have used it in two races with no problems. In fact I like it a lot better. I will try and take some pictures for you tonight and post them later. Clois |
My car, although a 427 SC, had an Indy-style straight stick which also put my knuckles into my toggle switches. From what I can tell, Hurst shifter sticks are all connected to the shifter with two bolts. I got on a Hurst site that listed dozens of various shifter stick styles and I picked out this awesome black annodized aluminum stick that was about 1 inch shorter and curves slightly back towards the driver. This put my shift knob in that perfect location and is no longer in conflict with the dash. By removing the shifter boot on the transmission tunnel, I was able to easily get to the two mounting bolts and change out the sticks. I bought the round black Hurst knob with the toploader shift pattern which looks great on the new stick.

Thanks guys - I'd somehow missed the Cleaning Hurst Shifters section on the toploaderheaven website, thats exactly what I was looking for to show how the Hurst shifter goes together.
Clois I think I might try cutting down the shifter stick on the one that I just got for free, and modify it so that I can use one of the bolt on short sticks, this will hopefully put the shifter closer to the centre of the tunnel as a bonus. I can see a saving of a few $$ here. Has anyone used Super & Indy after market Hurst shifters? Andy |

Clois - The welding job on the stick looks pretty neat, , I'm sure something like that will suit my 289 perfectly. Thanks for digging out the photos.
