Who is using something other than McLeod hyd t/o brg
Just wondering if anyone is using another brand of hydraulic throw out bearing with success on their FE Engine and Toploader transmission. Everyone seems to be using the McLeod unit. I just want to know if there are alternatives available.
When I was searching other brands they seemed to be limited to multi disc clutches and strictly racing applications (not for street use). Thanks, Clois |
I guess there is no substitute for a McLeod Hyd Throw out brg!

I have a stupid question Clois, you have called Tilton right?
Told you it was a stupid question! Rick |
race only
Hmmm...
Hydraulic throw out bearings are by nature "race only" parts. But then Cobra's are pretty much "race only" cars. I'm not trying to talk you out of using one, but the potential problems do outweigh the potential benefits for all but the most technophile among us. The days of needing the clamping pressures hydraulic bearings were intended to solve are long gone except under the most brutal conditions. Better clutch diaphrams, more advanced materials insure most performance clutches, hayes, mc loud, centerforce, ram and even oem style replacement units far exceed the demands placed on them. Case in point. My daily driver is a 5 year old Jeep XJ Cherokee. I lost my clutch at 180,000 miles. It just went. No notice. We got the tranny out and found the clutch to be at least 70% of new. The diaphram was the same. The flywheel looked like it had been machined. On the opposite side from the slave cylinder a $.035 clip which keeps the fork securely on the ball simply broke in two. I'm guessing my stern task-master / soup-nazi step mother who never let me rest my foot on the clutch petal until it was time to shift is to blame, er, thank but I imagine it has something to do with the compounds and technology as well. |

Clois Harlan Clois Try a Titlon Bearing PAW, Jegs, or Summit. What is the problem that you are having? You have the right depth for the bearing to the pressure plate? You have stops for the clutch pedal to not over extend the bearing?? If the lines are leaken change to elbow fittings. Make your own. If this is not working, try George A system and go with an AUTO:eek: ;) :D At lease you will not start out in 3 gear and smoke the clutch. Only kidding:D All you have to worry about is the RED LIGHT Problem:rolleyes: Rick Lake ps Call Lew is he having this problem??:)

Rick,Rick and Rick:D
I have my problem resolved....now. However, I was just wondering if anyone was using some other application. I did finally get through to Tilton but chose not to go that route. Lew is waiting on the ground to thaw so he can get to his garage and do some work on his trans. Haven't talked to him in a couple of weeks. I think he took Patti to the Cayman Islands for Valentines day. He is sucking up right now because I know he wants to spend some more money on his car. Clois |
Part # 721100 Quartermaster Hydraulic Throw-out (release) bearing, On some applications though you have to machine the T/O brearing shaft. about $250 +/- including machine work.

I'm running a Howe hydraulic TOB but its on a Chevy with a Richmond in my Lister. Only 20 miles on it so far with no problems. Only time will tell...

Dam, what am I doing wrong. If you click on the link you get to it, but I wanted to post the picture not the link.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. Bob |
Hey Robert,
Thanks for posting the picture. It looks very similar to a McLeod. I can't tell weather or not if Tilton is using a banjo fitting or not. Also, does it self aligh as the clutch disc wears down? I was almost ready to install one of the T/O brg that mounts directly to your trans. Clois |
