Which clutch???
Street Beasts Cobra kit w/5.0/302 w/Turbo and T-5 tranny (beefed up), so which clutch to use??
King Cobra for about $175 or SPEC Stage 2 for about $300 or SPEC Stage 3 for about $320 Any previous experiences or thoughts are appreciated. |
I did the mcLeod thing.
Tried another, but it froze on the spline. There were some problems with the center. Put McLeod in and works fine. |
I second the McLeod recommendation.
I don't have experience with all brands, but I do with McLeod, and their stuff works well. |
Ah geeeeeeeeee, another choice........you guys are gonna drive me crazy....oh well, at least its a short drive

Is this for a kit?? I figure it is but some folks post things for other car. What are you going to do with the car? Daily driver?? the Cobra clutch will work just fine. Rember that the car is so lite that clutch slip is going to be zip due to trying to move the car from a dead stop.
We use new clutch sets in all our cars and for street cars we use LUK sets. Never had a problem with a failure or chattering clutch. |
I used a Hays setup in my Cobra...10.5" Street/Strip clutch disc, and a Hays 3-finger pressure plate....about 2900 lbs of clamping force. It's a beardog to push in, but it will hold about anything you would throw at it. Pretty reasonable price too. Oh yeah, I used a McLeod T/O bearing....

I put in a third for the Mcleod setup. Scatter sheild, pressure plate, clutch all came from Mcleod. I did not want to take a chance on things not working or fitting together correctly. They have a good reputation...Tech people have a slight ego problem but I try not to let that bother me.

I noticed you said 5.0/302 with a turbo. How much horsepower are you dealing with? torque? DON |
I am shooting for 400 to 500hp range and not sure on the torque. I am installing a Lakewood scatter shield and back plate w/my T5 that was tweaked by a CA. race shop. I am planning on mostly street use with maybe an occassional solo type auto cross.

Personally I am going with a Mcleod twin disc street set-up. I have seen on a chassis dyno that once you get to about 500 rear wheel horsepower, some of the best single disc clutches start to slip around 425-450 horsepower. Not really noticeable in the light cobra's, shows up bigtime on chassis dyno.

Try Ford SVO,
Their parts are new, not rebuilt from cores like 99.9 percent of all aftermarket clutches. A 302 with a turbo and the power your talking is really no problem for a factory hi-po Clutch, plus it will fit on your spline. Ford has a bunch of good stuff for small blocks in thier SVT Catalog. Check it out. |
