Toploader speedo gear stripper
My toploader keeps stripping the plastic speedo driven gear. It appears to not contact the driving gear closely enough.
Anybody seen this problem before? |
Call David Kees, but it isn't your transgear, it's the driven gear for either the cable or transducer.
If the cable binds, it will strip the gear. If the tranducers' bearing go bad, it will strip the gear. Just a thought. |

I have seen this problem too many times.
There is a reverse speedo gear for automatics and a normal rotation gear for the manual transmissions. There is also a reverse speedo gear on the transmission and a normal speedo gear on the transmission. You have to have them matched correctly. On our cars, we put the reverse rotation speedo gear on the output shaft of the toploader 4 speed and put an automatic speedo gear on the speed cable. That way, the reverse speedo works with NO reverser! You also have to be careful because there are DIFFERENT tooth counts on the speedo gears on the tranny and on the cable. It can be a nightmare if you don't have it set up correctly. We ate many a gear before we figured out what was going on. You have to match them. David:) :) :) |
Okay, if you have a electronic Speedo, there may be a angled device connected where the speedo cable would go, That is a transducer. If it has wires instead of a cable that rotates, it is a transducer. It send pulses to the speedo at a rate relative to the rotation of your tail shaft.
Kirkham is right about the gears, which beggs a question: Has this ever worked before? Are you trying to connect a speedo that is electronic or mechanical ( cable driven )? |

Mechanical. It works for a few miles - not enough to see if I am using the correct gear for my rear end ratio and tire size - then the gear strips. It doesn't look like the driven gear is engaging enough. Do you know if the gears with more teeth are physically larger? If they are, I might need to use a larger gear even though the speedo won't be correct. |
Who supplied the cable?
It looks like the cable might have the wrong gear on it. David Kee would be able to help you with this better than I. I have a tranducer and programmable Speedo. However, take a flash light and look into the opening on the tail stock to make sure your teeth are running as described above for a manual trans. You should be able to see the gear and the run of the teeth. Now look at the cable. Are the teeth on the same direction or are they oposing? If it is too small, it would just not turn. if it was too big, it wouldn't fit. You probably have a speedo cable for an automatic in a standard trans car. G2G. |
Thats what happen to mine, I had a gear for a auto trans and it worked for about 1 mile. Mike

Ibr8k4vetts and Kirkham get the geniuses of the day award! I just returned from my friendly (but not too smart) Ford dealer. I insisted he order a manual transmission gear. He said that they were all the same - duh. He ordered one grudgingly and lo and behold the teeth point ///, not \\\ !
Thanks again guys. You saved me from multiple tickets because I never could tell how fast I was going when my butt is 5 inches from the ground. I wonder if English, Australian, and South African gears go the other way. Last thing... some toploaders do use backwards (auto trans) gears - they are the ones where the gear goes in the drivers side instead of the passenger side. I learned a lot about this stuff in the last week. Dirty side down. Over and out. |
