TKO II from 2-3
Do all TKO's shift like and old milk truck from 2-3 when your on it a little or is it me?
|
That is what I heard. I bought a Pro 5.0 then found out it is too high for the ERA tunnel. I wish someone would find a better shifter that fit the ERA
What gear oil are you using? |
Joea,
I using Valvoline ATF, nothing special, do you have a better Idea? I spoke to Mark who has ERA 627 and he said their is special fluid that will help the problem, but not solve the problem, do you know anything about it? How high is Pro 5.0? I made a special ring for the TKO that is about 3/4" high. Mike |
The recommended fluid is GM Synchro.
I have not attempted to fit the Pro 5.0 in the car. I understand the stock shifter is already high...thus the required spacer. My understanding is the Pro 5.0 quite a bit higher than that |
Mike,
Pro 5.0 is higher than the stock shifter and doesn't fit well in the ERA trans tunnel. In fact, I ruined one trans tunnel trying to get the Pro 5.0 shifter to fit properly:rolleyes: I had to order a new trans tunnel, and after speaking to Doug at ERA, just decided to use the stock shifter. I suppose you could make a spacer tall enough to make it work with the Pro 5.0, but it would probably look ridiculous. As it is, you have to use that 3/4" spacer with the stock shifter. I am also using the GM Synchromesh fluid and haven't noticed and real problems shifting. I've got about 1300 miles on it now and the shifting seems to be improving with mileage. |
It shifts ok at low RPM's but at about 4000 it a problem.
You guys are telling me to change the fluid. Is there a trans doctor close by who can doctor it up? |
|
Bill,
Did you try this stuff? It looks good at the site. thanks Mike |
Removing ERA 427 Tunnel
Chaplin, I believe I need to remove my tunnel to gain access to my 3550. Any suggestions to more easily remove and install these tunnels on the ERA 427 cars?
Thanks, Dave |
TUNNEL
I LOWER MY TUNNEL ON MY LONE STAR. I CUT THE FIBERGLASS OUT FROM JUST UNDER THE DASH TO JUST REAR OF THE SHIFTER. I HAD A PIECE OF ALUM BEND TO COVER THE HOLE. SILCONE AND POPRIVERS. COVER IT WITH PAD AND CARPET.

Unfortunately there is only one way to do it, which, as I'm sure you know, requires removing the seats, carpets and rear panel. However, once you've done it a few times it gets easier and easier. Just use an electric drill with a screwsdriver bit to remove/reinstall and the screws and it will go a lot faster. I can probably remove mine in 20 minutes or so at this point. |
I changed the fluid to to Ultra Shift and now after about 200 more miles it shifts better but not perfect.
|
What % improverment in your opinion?
|
I went from the GM Synchromesh to the Ultra Shift about 350 miles ago. Didn't see much of a difference at first (I also have a Pro 5.0) but it seems like it shifts better every time I take it out now. It's supposed to improve after about 500 miles, or so. So far, it seems like that could be the case because it just keeps getting smoother all the time.
|
% of improvement is hard to say, but I'll do it.
I would say 50 % less missed shifts. I'll give it more time (miles) and report back. |
not too shabby

TKO AND ULTA-SHIFT FLUID
WHICH DO I NEED FOR MY TKO THAT HAS REDLINE FLUILD IN IT NOW?
ULTRA-SHIFT OR ULTIMATE Tremec Transmission Treatment -for A.T.F. Based Fluids 11.5 ounce bottle (treats 6 quarts @ 2.0 oz per quart) (treats 4 quarts @ 3.0 oz per quart) I THINK THE TKO HOLDS 2 AND 3/4 QTS. NOW MUCH ADDITIVE (ULTIMATE) WOULD I ADD? WHICH IS BEST? MY TKO GRINDS GOING INTO REVERSE. ITS BETTER IF I SHIFT INTO 3RD OR 4TH BEFORE GOING TO REVERSE. THANKS |
I used the Ultra Shift, not the additive. It's not cheap stuff, but after 500 miles either it's working better or I got used to it, now it's 75-80 % better.
