460ci . . . . Can I use a T-5?
I've heard as many yeses and no on this one so here we go . . .
I got a simple stock 460ci and want to use a T-5 with it. Some say it will not match up, and some say it would work fine. So, before I drop the $$$ on a tranny, any advice for me? Please . . . . |
My first t-5 lasted 760 miles behind a 351w. Spend the money and buy a tremec. Jim

A 460 will turn a stock T5 gear set into a lot of small pieces. G-Force does a high torque gear set that might work but that would put your investment in the $ range of a Tremec.

Go for the new Tremec 600.

The TTC 4615, 4617, 5008 or 5021 are all very good options; but not the T5!**)

Steve,
C'mon buddy. :D You're going to drop that tank into the car and try to get away with the T5? I ain't a mechanic, but sumpin' sure don't seem right about that... Besides, what happened to going with the small block? I think a mild build up 351W is about as far as you'd want to go with the T5. A 460 would eat it for lunch. Get serious about driving your Cobra and go with the 351W. ;) Steve |
A T5 is only rated between 235 up to 310 lb/ft of maximum torque, depending on the year it was made. Even a mild 460 would chew it up in no time at all.
Just get the Tremec Ford TKO 600, it will pay for it's self in not having to rebuild it every week or two. The Ford TKO 600 is torque rated at 600ft/lbs. 26 spline input shaft with a 31 spline output shaft. Comes in two standard over drive configurations 1) 2.87 first gear .82od and 2) 2.87 first gear with .64od. Standard shift location is the rear "Mustang" shift point. Mid and front shift kits available. Main case bolt pattern remains the "toploader" pattern. Hope this helps. |

Go with the TKO 500/600. The T5 won't last long.
I'm offering a special right now... I can also supply all clutch components/bellhousings/flywheels, etc. that you will need. |
