Tolerance for pilot bushing / trans shaft

Does anyone know what the correct tolerance should be for the ID on the pilot bushing / transmission in put shaft?

I have a 428 engine and a TKO trans. now I have about .035 and I think it's a lot.

I agree. That's way too much. That must be the wrong pilot bushing.

Absolutely! While I can't tell you exactly what clearance you want, basically, you want a fit that will allow for almost NO movement. You want to be able to slide the bushing ove the shaft, but it shouldn't have any real "wiggle" to it.

ERA629 Mike I have a roller bearing in my car. There is some play. You have to take into account the heating cycles every time you run the car. The amount the bellhousing is off center on the back of the block. There is a little end play on the input of the trans, you have roller bearings there. You have alot of heat in there so the size will decrease. Call Bob P and ask I don't have a spec. If too tight you could weld the trans to motor if the bushing is steel and not bronze. If you don't have a shifting problem I would leave it alone. Make sure you grease the bushing and input shaft with some hi temp grease. Rick Lake
