Tremec question

Hey Everyone,
I'm trying to decide which tranny I want to use. I'll probably go with some type of Tremec. How do I know which model I need? What are the differences between them?

Mike, Go to this site http://www.tremectransmissions.com/E...oducts/TKO.asp
scroll down the page and you will see the 5 speed TKO trans. 4 & 6 speeds are also on the site.

Engine? Rear end ratio? Wheel and tire size? Intended use?
The above are needed for an informed opinion on the transmission.

Thanks for the website, Al. It should help me get some answers.
And Don... it sounds like I'm going to have to get more specific with my set up. All I know is that I'm shooting for 400+ ft/lbs of torque. A lot of your other questions are still up in the air. Thanks for your input, guys.

Mike:
You might want to spend some time at - http://www.368s.com/tools_rpm.phtml -
This is a gear ratio calculator that's easy to use, just plug in the numbers, and can give you an idea of speeds/rpm/gear for different combinations.

Mike:
Just as a for instance my setup is as follows:
Tremec TKO 600 w/ 0.82 fifth
3.07 final drive ratio
11X17 Wheels w/315X35X17 tires
Engine is a 428 opened up to 450 cu. in and putting out somewhere around 450 hp.
I spend a long time with the gear calculators trying different combinations until I arrived at the above.
The car is/was intended to be a street driver from the start Power wise, if I simply snap the throttle open in either 1st or 2nd it will break the rear wheels loose but it's a very tractable setup on the street as long as I don't get rambunctious. Highway cruise at 70 gives me about 2300 rpm and I hear more wind noise than exhaust.
All of the components inter-relate with eachother in figuring out your final setup.
Take some time and consider the final combination before you commit to it. Sometimes the morning after will bring some considerations into light that you hadn't considered the night before. DonC

Hey Don...I never realized that there was so much involved in picking out a tranny. But I know I definitely want to get it right. My car won't even be delivered for 2 more weeks, so I still have some time to figure it all out. I'm sure I'll be back to this forum for more info. Thanks!

Mike
