Clutch help, Please.
Hello all! After running for a year, I pulled the side oiler out of the cobra and sent it off to Keith C. as it was in need of some major work. Now that the engine is done and on its way home, I am turning my attention to the reinstall. It has been 20+ years since I have installed an engine, so just consider me new. Let me first explain that I have not pulled the tranny out of my car and don't even know which Tremec it is. (I know, I should...but just never looked). It is one of the 5 speeds. I need some advice on clutch parts. The pressure plate that came out of the thing is pretty well hosed and the clutch plate is dang near down to the rivets. I cannot find any manufacture name on the clutch plate or pressure plate assembly. I did find the number pl-289F on the back of the pressure plate (plate itself) and found this..
http://www.ucagroup.com/clutch.htm I do have a 10 spline input (I have not measured the diameter) and the pressure plate by this page is 11 inches. It has 3 forks, not the radial array of forks that I have usually seen . Keith built my engine to 580hp/524ft lbs. So here are my silly, uneducated questions. I am getting ready to order the parts, and basically have no idea what to get. I will pull the tranny in the next couple of days. How do I identify which Tremec I have. What is your advice on the clutch/pressure plate kit? Brand? Can the pressure plate assembly be rebuilt/machined? I do not have a hydraulic throw out but the bearing. I will need a new bearing as well, but no numbers are on the current one I have. Boy, I know I sound stupid on this, but I have yet to have the time to get out and pull it all out and research it to get the right stuff. Any help is appreciated. Dang, I would love to have this back together when the Tulsa meet is scheduled.... Clois!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!! (thanks for the call the other day, it made me smile.... Got out of Vegas with a couple of bucks!) Buzz |
Ok...I'd say it's a 3550. A TKO is a 26 spline input.
Now, your pressure plate is a "Long" style pressure plate. It's common to Fords.....similar to a Borg & Beck style for GM. I wouldn't fool around with having the assembly rebuilt. It's a lot less hassle to just order a new kit. The new kit will come with the disc, the pressure plate, and a new throw out bearing. If you want it to be a painless choice, I would just call David Kee at David Kee Toploaders. He could tell you exactly what you need and send you whatever parts. He sells McLeod stuff. You're gonna need a clutch kit with a good clamping force to be able to hold the torque of that engine. McLeod makes a good setup....so does Hays and Ram. I would stick with a major brand. An 11" or 12" setup would be fine....I would go with a Long type setup again. You'll need a 10 spline clutch disc for a Tremec tranny. A 4 speed Toploader is also a 10 spline, but I don't think the diameters are the same....so make sure you tell whoever what tranny you're using. Go to www.davidkeetoploaders.com , grab the phone number, and give David a call. Within 10 minutes, you'll have everything you need on its way to your door. You can either call him, or go to the different manufacturer webpages and search for what you want. It's a lot easier to just call him....he'll know exactly what you need. |
Buzz,
Brent is right on target, as usual. I will see you about 4:30. Clois Just to make you feel a little better one of our IT guys went out to the Cherokee Casino last Fri after work and won $25,000.00 his girlfriend even won $3000. Must have been their day. |
You just need to make sure you get the FE pressure plate for a small input Toploader. McLeod makes both a 11 in and 12 in. setup.

He doesn't have a Toploader....Dreamer....he's got a Tremec. I don't know if the input shaft diameters are the same.....
|
Yea I know he has a Tremec. The Tremecs use the same pressure plates as the small input Toploader. How do I know?:
