Input shaft compatibility for wide vs. close ratio
Input shaft of toploader:
Can a close ratio input shaft be used in a wide ratio tranny? |
No
|
Gotta change all the gears to match the input gear. When your done, well, by golly you got yourself a close ratio trans (or wide ratio depending on which way you went)!
|
1st gear is the same in either tranny. All other gears are different.
|
The input shaft is 4th gear.
...the mystery deepens! :D |
NOT TRUE ON FIRST GEAR. WIDE RATIO IS 2.78 AND THE CLOSE RATIO IS 2.32.

If you look on David Kee's site, the first gear on both tranny's has the same number of teeth, the second gear is the different number of teeth.
That is why I was asking if I could use it. Also, David sells the new input gears, but he has different part numbers from wide and close ratio tranny's. So, the consensus is no? |
SORRY GUYS, I THOUGHT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT OUT OF THE FACTORY TOP LOADERS.

Consensus? We got one of them? :D
I was thinking the two gears (close vs wide) have a different physical size and that was one way to tell them apart. Same number of teeth, but different size gears? I don't think they will interchange. Input shaft I'm talking about, 4th gear. |
The actual first gear itself, not the ratio, is the same in both the close and wide ratio trannies. It is the same part.
In addition, the reverse gear is the same part as well. You would need to buy a new input shaft/gear, 3rd, 2nd, and a cluster gear, assuming your 1st gear is usable, that is synchro teeth are OK and there is no rust on the big teeth. |
Anthony or others who know-
Let's say I want to keep my wide ratio tranny (1-1/16" input), but use an input shaft and gear from a close ratio tranny (1-3/8" input)- could I do this with just shaft and gear? I am just trying to convert to a big input shaft, but wondering if I need to match the ratio of the tranny the input I take is coming from. |
#1) no
#2) Buy a large spline wide ratio input shaft/gear from David Kee , and a large input bearing retainer and large through-out bearing and clutch fork. This will do it for you. |
