Toploader Input Shaft Pilot
Guys.....what's the info on toploader input shaft pilots...
Could I use a small block input with an FE pilot bushing? Do they need to be cut off to 3/4" ? |
Yes, the big block top loader had a shorter, fatter input shaft than the small block. If you want to put a big block trans behind a small block, there is a pilot bearing made for this that is stepped. If you want to put a small block trans behind a big block, you should either have the input shaft machined ($$$) or put in a big block input shaft...call David Kee for parts and prices. If the long input shaft goes into a big block, it can put a lot of load on the crank and burn the thrust bearing.
If you are running a 429/460, you can put a small input shaft trans in by using a bell housing from the 351/400 series--it will put the trans at the right point. I also have seen people make a simple adapter to go between the trans and bellhousing to space the trans back--may have to shim the flywheel too. The snout is 1.125" long on the small input and .750 on the large input, a difference of .375 inches, or 3/8ths, NOT 3/4! Pilot bearings have to match the trans..... |
