Tremec 600 grind in third?
Anyone having a problem with a grind when shifting up to third gear with the new Tremec 600 trans? I have one car doing it and have now have heard from two others with the same problem. Have not contacted Tremec yet. These are all cars that have not been raced, but do possess over 500HP.
Thanks, Doug |
I haven't had any problems with the TKO600.

Thanks, ST. I also have had 20 cars with the TKO600 that did not have this problem. I really want to hear from anyone else who HAS a problem like I decribed. No need for everyone that does not have a problem to respond. If I do hear for others that have this similar problem, then I will continue with my quest to a solution, and yes, these are under warranty.
I just thought I would survey the Club cobra group before going to Tremec with these issues. Doug |
I would suspect that the "grind" in third has nothing to do with the horsepower that is referenced in your post. Sounds more like a blocker ring that is not doing its job.
|
Thanks, F O F, I agree with your comment. My post is more geared to decide if there is a common problem surfacing within these 600's or possible isolated and coincidental problems that I am seeing.

What oil do you have in it? Anything other than Tremec's recommended oil could give you problems with the synchromesh.
Not sure what the newer boxes want, but my older TKO likes Dexron II ATF. plus, of course, is the clutch clearing 100%? |
Doug, how many miles on the box in question? Mine was pretty much a rock crusher for the first 1K, then, like magic, it became (almost) Honda-like. Haven't changed the fluid yet.

Thanks guys, but I'm really not looking for why it is like this or why it got like this. This is not a problem and solution thread, but thanks for the help.
Wilf, I have done over three hundred Tremecs in the last few years and always use the recommended GM Syncromesh fluid with a little of a special uniglide friction modifier. Terry none of these three in question has over 600 miles on them. Seems to be a fluke with maybe rings not hardened properly or? |
I have 2000 miles and 16 X 15 minute road race sessions using Ultra Shift synthetic with no problems.

The fact that the transmission appears to shift well in the other gears would tell me that the problem is isolated to third gear, most likely the blocker ring. Too much lubricity often times reduces the requisite friction needed for the blocker ring to slow down the cone clutch on the corresponding gear. That is why synthetic transmission fluid is not suggested on a Toploader.
My suggestion would be to run it and see if the ring seats in over a period of time. Just shift it easy so you don't chew up the engagement teeth on the gear or the synchro slider. |
